In all sign languages, hands are only one part of the chain of communication. Facial expressions and bodily posture often contribute to the overall meaning of a sign or a sentence. These can add emotion, degree, perspective, or even more crucial information such as whether the signer is asking a question, or whether they are making a positive or negative sentence. As such, it is very important to pay attention to when these nonmanuals (i.e. linguistic elements not involving the hands) are used.
