In many if not all sign languages, it is common and normal to simply point to individuals or objects that are being referred to. This use of pointing, or 'indexicals', takes the place of at least some pronouns in possibly every sign language. That is, instead of having unique signs for I, you, he, she, we, etc., the signer will simply point to the person being referred to. God can also be referred to by simply pointing up. Similarly, one can simply point to a visible body part rather than use (or innovate) a sign for that body part. Lastly, some concepts of time and space like 'here', 'now', 'today', etc., can also be referred to by simply pointing down to refer to the present time and place.
One notable fact of Bangla SL indexicals is that the exact handshape can vary. Often we see, the most basic form, with an extended index finger; we label this IX1. Some signers have told us that it may be slightly more polite to use the entire hand, with all fingers directed towards the referent; this is labeled IX2. A third option is to use the whole hand but with the palm towards or touching the referent; this is labeled IX3.
The last part of an indexical's label shows where it is pointing. This is shown with the "^" symbol followed by SELF for when the signer is pointing to themself, FRONT for when the signer is pointing forward, usually at their conversation partner, IPSI for when the signer points to their dominant hand side (usually the right side), CONTRA for when the signer points to their non-dominant hand side (usually the left side), UP for when the signer points over their head, and DOWN for when the signer points towards the ground. If specific body parts are pointed to, those can be written as the label, such as IX1^FOREHEAD for 'forehead'.
