প্রায় সব ইশারা ভাষাতেই, কিছু কজিছু ইশারা বস্তুর বৃহৎ শ্রেণীকে নির্দেশ করে, যা প্রায়শই তাদের আকৃতি, আকার, গতি এবং অন্যান্য ভৌত বৈশিষ্ট্য বুঝায়। উদাহরণস্বরূপ, ছোট একটা ফল খাওয়ার বিষয়ে কথা বলার সময়, একজন ইশারাভাষী ফলটার নাম বারে বারে না বলে কেবল "ছোট জিনিস"-এর ইশারা ব্যবহার করতে পারেন। ভাষাবিদরা এই ধরনের ইশারাকে 'শ্রেণীবিভাজক' (classifiers) বলেন, কারণ এগুলো বিশেষ্যকে তার বাহ্যিক রূপ অনুসারে শ্রেণীভুক্ত (classify) করে।

In many if not all sign languages, some signs refer to large classes of objects, often identifying their shape, size, movement, and other physical properties. For example, when talking about eating a small fruit, a signer might simply use the sign for a small object rather than constantly refer to the fruit by its name. Linguists call signs like these "classifiers" because of how they classify nouns by physical appearance.

On our website, we use the abbreviation "cla" to label all classifiers, followed by a hyphen and a name. For example, the small object classifier is labeled cla-SMALL.OBJECT.
