President's Message
Summer is ending... sadly? Maybe I'm not so sad to see it go - especially with the high temps we've had these last few years. But with the end of summer our club gets down to business with service! It is during the fall that we re-establish our friendships (because we see each other more often) and enjoy sharing our talents with others.
We have a lot happening in the next month or so. We begin by hosting our Area III Workshop on October 4th at Jo-Kells. The committee worked very hard to organize a wonderful day with sharing, learning, and doing... it will be a day to enjoy and I hope to see many Tidewater Altrusans attend. If you are planning to attend, please register. You're welcome to bring your registration check for $25 to Monday's meeting so you can by-pass sending it to Susan or paying by credit card. Save a stamp!
We also being our Fall Plant Sale soon. Barb S. has been working to organize it. Be sure to communicate with your customers that it will be starting soon! This fund raiser has become a large part of our budget that supports our scholarships and other service projects, so try to get one or two more customers to support our cause.
The sensory garden will soon be in full swing - planning, purchasing, and planting! Keep a lookout for dates so you can be a part of this awesome project!
At the June meeting we discussed our commitment to Altrusa. Commit to one or more of the following...
Invite someone to an Altrusa event
Personnally welcome a new member
Recognize a current member for their contributions
Share why I love Altrusa on Social Media (many of you did that already... great job!)
Offer to mentor someone
Other... my suggestion - stay organized by having a special binder for agendas and other documents so your "Altrusa History" is at your fingertips... and bring it to the meeting!
It will be another great club year ... leading to a better community!

EXTRA! EXTRA! Our Mirror of Hope Garage Sale was a HUGE SUCCESS!
This garage sale was awesome! Thank you all!
Jennifer's driveway and front lawn were covered with treasures old and new for sale. The early bird buyers started at 7:30 am, as we were setting up. It's a good thing there were snacks in the kitchen!
Visitors were pleased to hear about Altrusa and to see Deb's photos of the students who will benefit from this sale.
Thank you all for contributions, work at the site, and the care you've shown for this project. Come to our next meeting to hear the grand total raised!

Work has begun on our holiday crafts! In late August, Ellen hosted a small group, Colleen, June and Jennifer, who, with some easy tree trimming ideas from Deb D., started creating some easy fabric garlands! Join us next time! Contact any of us if you'd like to join our impromptu gatherings!

Errol and I had a lovely 4 days in NYC visiting with his sister and husband who were visiting from Israel, and his brother who lives in NYC. We toured the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, saw “Wicked”, walked a lot in Central Park and the Highline, and ate way too much.
Cathy Malley
This summer was busy with trips in June to the week long Chesapeake Writer’s Conference in St. Mary’s, MD. I also visited my daughter in Alexandria, VA for a few days. In July, I spent time in Richmond for some Virginia Education Association training. My sister Susan Eastman and I also went to the Frieda Kahlo exhibit at the VMFA. My last trip was to Tucson, AZ to help my sister Helen recover from knee surgery.

Altrusa International Literacy Challenge One Book at a Time, Part II
President Linda is continuing Immediate Past President Kathy book challenge and we want you to be a part of it. President Linda firmly believe that literacy is the number one focus for Altrusa and we want to continue to enhance that commitment. Our ultimate goal is to enhance the lives of others ONE BOOK AT A TIME! The challenge is for Altrusans to distribute one million books and/or devote 500,000 literacy service hours to our communities during the 2023-2025 biennium. So how can you participate?
Develop a signature literacy project (or expand on an existing one) that will continue to grow and develop into the future. Large and small clubs alike can participate in this challenge.
2. Assign a record keeper to keep track of the number of books you distribute AND/OR the number of service hours you spend (for example reading to children, the elderly, participating in a book exchange … something that works for you, your club and your community).
3. Carry the project over through the next club year.
4. Send your numbers (for both years) to the International Service Committee before
June 1, 2025. The easiest way to record this is to record each time you club donates books so you don’t forget any!
5. Sit back and relish in the fact that you are making a difference …. ONE BOOK AT A TIME.
Remember the end goal is to enhance the lives of others. And the simple gift of a book to a child who has never had one can help eradicate illiteracy and give these children a chance to succeed in life. Will you accept the challenge and join our movement? We all know that Altrusans R.O.C.K. and what better want to REALIZE OPPORTUNITY, CREATE KINDNESS than to create intentional acts of kindess by donating books. As Altrusans we can make a difference! We can change lives – sometimes the book you donate is the only one a child can call their own! Let’s help others develop a passion for reading that will last a lifetime!
