Greetings Altrusans!
This record, summer heat has me thinking how much of a blessing it is for the invention of air conditioning! We can all thank Mr. Willis Carrier of Angola, New York for this wonderful invention. On July 17, 1902, he designed the world’s first modern air-conditioning system! An interesting fact about Mr. Carrier is as a child, he found math, especially fractions, to be a very hard concept to grasp. I shared his same concerns with my own math abilities! His mother came up with a great idea, as most ladies do, to support Willis in his struggle. She cut up a whole apple into equal parts to show the “fractional pieces”. Later in his life, he shared that this lesson was the most important one he had ever learned because it taught him the value of intelligent problem-solving. As Altrusans, we pride ourselves as problem solvers and community helpers!
August 12, 2022 will mark International Youth Day. The objective for 2022 shares the importance of recognizing people of all ages and facing the negative issues that encompass ageism.
Please see the link below for more details on the importance of creating a world for people of all ages:
Please enjoy the remainder of your summer and thank you for all you do every day to make our community a better place.
All the Best,
Tracey

Barbara S. and Don enjoyed France during a trip postponed from 2020 and 2021. They enjoyed 4 days in Paris on their own enjoying the street cafes and learning to use the Metro System. A personal guided tour of The Louvre was one of Barbara’s favorite days. Don got to pretend he was the Phantom on a self-guided tour of the Paris Opera House. They joined a Viking ship on the Seine and cruised to Normandy where they saw young re-enactors having lunch on a break from a documentary being filmed. Touring the American/English beaches and the cemetery was quite a moving experience. Another day they hiked up a mountain to ruins of the castle of Richard the Lion-Hearted. They toured the Palace of Josephine called Malmaison and also toured the Palace and Gardens of Versailles. They extended the trip to the Loire Valley where they stopped by a winery and toured a cave where bottles of Vouvray are aged. Of course, they had a few bottles sent home. Chartres Cathedral in Rouen was spectacular. Barbara enjoyed a lunch consisting of local fruits topping a creamy tart with a glass of wine in the square outside the Chartres Cathedral. In the Loire Valley they stayed in Tours where the Cathedral of Joan d’Arc is located. Obviously, they indulged in their hobby of tasting wine while eating wonderful foods.
