For the full first week of November I daily attempted to write this letter. Since it's November my thoughts were on gratefulness. However, Larry and I have been on an unplanned journey and the path has been rocky. We have seen signs reading blood clots, lung lesions, high blood pressure, low blood pressure, extreme fatigue, lack of appetite- and so many medical tests in just the first week of November.
All I know for sure is that I am grateful for dear friends, quality hospital staff, and fifty-two years with a good man.
Sherral and I had a good time together going to the October Area III workshop and I know she will step up and help me get things done for our club.
But for right now, as we navigate Larry's advanced-stage lung cancer, I would ask your patience if I miss some events.
Together let's continue to do what we can to build better communities, following the plans already in motion.
I remain your grateful president.
Ellen

At our October Writing Party members wrote words of thanks and encouragement to service members in Germany. This Make a Difference Day hopefully reminded service members of their importance and our gratitude for their service to our country.

Sherral and Ken’s granddaughter Codi recently committed to Brown university. She will start there in fall 2023.
Barbara S.’s friend Jane Tolar visited from Maryland this past weekend. Jane taught a small group from the Tidewater Basketry Guild pine needle coiling. The group made Christmas ornaments.
Barbara and Jane had a special tour of the Naval Hospital from another TBG member, Master Chief and Corpsman Sybil MaGrill. Jane’s father served at the Naval Hospital in 1927-1928.
Jennifer and Doug went to Marion, Va to visit Violet.
I experienced the month recovering from my second CSF surgery. I was extremely blessed with the care provided by my brothers Buster(DC), Dudley(NY) and friend Sulaiman. I am thankful to my friends, Altrusa sisters, family and neighbors for prayers, well wishes, cards, calls, texts and labors of love. It is a blessing from all who helped and continue to help me through this healing journey. I am now able to drive short distances and slowly resume household duties. Still no major yard work.
My "92" years young church member faithfully picked up her pansy order from my home (pictured) as did all of my customers. My brother Buster cared for the pansies and my brother Dudley and Master Gardener Will installed a slate walkway.

Sherral and Ellen rode to Martinsville VA to attend the Saturday, October 23 workshop for Area III. The sunflower decor brightened our day, and the icebreaker was answering, "What has been a positive outcome from the pandemic?". We shared that we had more time for reading, learned more technology, and visited online with friends and relatives we had neglected.
A published children's book author shared tips, we heard club reports and the highlight was an interesting tour of the Virginia Museum of Natural History. That alone was worth the trip!
We are grateful for the friends and experiences of Altrusa International.
