Annual Retreat!
Our Annual Retreat to discuss new service, membership, and fundraising ideas is this Saturday - June 15th! We'll meet at JoKell's at 9 am for a brief social and begin our meeting at 9:30 and wrap up the day about 2:pm.
What to bring??
Remember to bring your dish to pass. Click here to view the list of items others are planning to bring.
Bring a calendar so you can review dates during our discussion (or use your phone or other device if you prefer).
Bring CASH or checks AND bring an item for the fundraiser.
As a club fundraiser, we will have our version of a "silent auction". Members bring gently used items (jewelry, household items, etc) that others may like to add to their home.
Participants purchase tickets (so remember to bring some cash/checks) and place in cups near each item.
Towards the end of the day tickets for each item will be pulled to see who "silently" won! The more tickets you put in a cup, the better your chances of winning!

Greetings Altrusans!
I hope this message finds you all doing very well. June is here! As the school year comes to a close; I love to see all the excitement of summer plans, adventures, and growing gardens! I have decided to be a bit less “adventurous” with my garden this year. I have simplified it to one large, raised steel container to grow tomatoes and peppers. Another large barrel for herbs. With the welcoming of a new puppy, Sulley, to our family we need more grass space and less garden space. In addition, creating more “green space” for my grandson is a “must do”! I think it would be a great idea to share pictures of our gardens and flowers! Let’s do that!
On June 5th, we recognize World Environment Day. This year's theme is “Our land, Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration”. As Altrusans, we are mindful of protecting our environment and conserving our natural resources. Books for Green Run Elementary Kindergarteners
The books have arrived! Altrusa of Tidewater, Inc. has purchased the book First Grade, Here I Come, for each rising first grader at Green Run Elementary School. In addition we have received 50 new assorted books from Reading Enriches All Children to be given to the students. Each child will receive their books in a colorful watermelon print tote bag, which was also purchased by our club. The teachers plan to add items to the bag as well.
As the school year comes to a close I want to say thank you to all those members that were able to read to the students this year. They were always so excited to see the “reading ladies” arrive at their door every other Friday. I know they, and their teachers were very appreciative of the time you all took to help instill in them the love of books. A job well done Altrusans!
Reading with Green Run Elementary Kindergarteners
In May, Robyn and Lisa C. enjoyed reading stories to Kindergarteners in three classrooms. As Robyn read The Monster at the End of this Book , by Jon Stone, the students had fun helping Grover, one of the Muppets, discover who the monster at the end of the book really was! In the book, Elmer, by David McKee, the kindergarteners and Lisa saw how much fun it can be celebrating our differences with our friends.
The 2024 graduating class of Tagpoponagn Senior High School on Samal Island, The Philippines is the first class to benefit from computers. Thanks to the hard working members of Altrusa of Tidewater Tagpoponagn has 20 mini PCs, mice, keyboards, screens and two interactive projectors for two computer labs in their school. Our members applied for a Foundation Grant and was awarded $4000.00 for the project.

The scholarship committee (Kathy, Robyn, Cathy, Barbara, and Chris) met at Chris' house on June 1 to review the applications submitted. We received 15 applications and were able to award 7 of those students $500 each towards their continuing education. We are pleased to announce the following scholarship recipients:
Recipient #1 will be attending Roanoke College to pursue her dream of becoming a physical therapist.
Recipient #2 is returning to school to become a nurse. She will be taking classes at the Central School of Practical Nursing through the Norfolk Technical Center.
Recipient #3 wants to become a nurse in pediatric oncology and will be pursuing her degree at Longwood University.
Recipient #4 is planning to major in cyber security with an emphasis on leadership training at Christopher Newport University.
Recipient #5 will be studying industrial design at James Madison University.
Recipient #6 plans to study dentistry at the University of Virginia.
Recipient #7 will be pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech.
All of the recipients are highly motivated individuals who have already made a difference at their schools and in the community. They also share a need for financial aid. We are proud to have helped them in pursuing their goals.

At the June meeting, Marcy conducted the installation of the 2024-25 Board of Directions, with help from Joyce. The theme of the installation was "Bee the Change".

Ellen's Trip to Kansas - Lunched with some Altrusans!
My recent visit to Kansas was enhanced by a social lunch in Salina with President Linda K and Brenda Smith and their club. We exchanged service, financial and social ideas at Carlos O' Kelly's! One gal even helped me out by recycling beany baby bears to a domestic shelter.

1. Celebrated my church members 93rd Birthday
2. While in Crisfield helped my 89 year old cousin Eleanor plant her garden tub
3. Met my younger cousin Jammie Jr. at my Father's homestead in Oriole, Maryland, where we will be working on the home and placing paths through the land. With the potential for fishing, crabbing and hunting.
4. Having my pond renovated
6. Working on my flowers and plants
7. Had opportunity to spend quality time with Judy, after celebrating the life of our dear friend Tara.

Barbara and Don Attended the graduation of their granddaughter Elizabeth in Asheville, NC. Elizabeth graduated with Highest Honors from Nesbitt Discovery Academy the Buncombe County STEM High School. Elizabeth will attend the University of North Carolina in the fall.

Altrusa International Literacy Challenge One Book at a Time, Part II
Altrusa International Literacy Challenge One Book at a Time, Part II
President Linda is continuing Immediate Past President Kathy book challenge and we want you to be a part of it. President Linda firmly believe that literacy is the number one focus for Altrusa and we want to continue to enhance that commitment. Our ultimate goal is to enhance the lives of others ONE BOOK AT A TIME! The challenge is for Altrusans to distribute one million books and/or devote 500,000 literacy service hours to our communities during the 2023-2025 biennium. So how can you participate?
Develop a signature literacy project (or expand on an existing one) that will continue to grow and develop into the future. Large and small clubs alike can participate in this challenge.
2. Assign a record keeper to keep track of the number of books you distribute AND/OR the number of service hours you spend (for example reading to children, the elderly, participating in a book exchange … something that works for you, your club and your community).
3. Carry the project over through the next club year.
4. Send your numbers (for both years) to the International Service Committee before
June 1, 2025. The easiest way to record this is to record each time you club donates books so you don’t forget any!
5. Sit back and relish in the fact that you are making a difference …. ONE BOOK AT A TIME.
Remember the end goal is to enhance the lives of others. And the simple gift of a book to a child who has never had one can help eradicate illiteracy and give these children a chance to succeed in life. Will you accept the challenge and join our movement? We all know that Altrusans R.O.C.K. and what better want to REALIZE OPPORTUNITY, CREATE KINDNESS than to create intentional acts of kindess by donating books. As Altrusans we can make a difference! We can change lives – sometimes the book you donate is the only one a child can call their own! Let’s help others develop a passion for reading that will last a lifetime!
