We begin June with great expectations and a quiet excitement, ready to move forward in Altrusa and in life! I expect good things-health and peace and service- as we reach out to build a better community. We have made good choices by becoming members of a wonderful club and we can be grateful and happy to be survivors.
It is time to celebrate, have a bit of fun, and also be functional.
For so many months we have passed on doing activities with others.
Now without fear, we can go into the world with confidence.
I encourage us all to gather with positive thoughts and excitement that comes from being with good people, doing helpful service, and having FUN in 2021!

JUNETEENTH
Juneteenth (named for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.
Confederate General Robert E. Lee had surrendered at Appomattox Court House two months earlier in Virginia, but slavery had remained relatively unaffected in Texas—until U.S. General Gordon Granger stood on Texas soil and read General Orders No. 3: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”

Although not a National holiday, since 1980 Juneteenth has been declared a state holiday in several states. In June 2020, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam declared “Juneteenth” to be a Virginia State Holiday, When a holiday falls on the weekend, it is often celebrated on the Friday before or the Monday after, as is the case for 2021.
The Book Club is happy to be meeting in person again. Saturday, June 26, at 10:00 AM, we will meet at Swan Terrace to discuss The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larsen. Join us for an interesting discussion and bring your suggestions for books for future discussions. We meet approximately every other month.
Chris has been very busy this season, making and delivering pottery. Her work can be seen in SeaDragon Gallery in Duck, Pea Island Art Gallery in Rodanthe, The Blue Lagoon in Frisco, and Deepwater Pottery in Ocracoke, as well as in Tin Soldiers in VA Beach and Fireflies in Suffolk. Needless to say, she has put many miles on her car!
May was Blanch's month for healing, recovery and recuperation from surgery that corrected her Cerebrospinal Rhinorrhea condition. Many thanks to her Altrusa sisters, (Dudley first 10 days) and friends for assistance with food, store runs, errands, household chores, calls, cards and gifts. Two friends from Baltimore and Spotsylvania did a day trip bearing meals on wheels. Master Gardeners helped with potting. She is still recovering and extremely Blessed.
