President's Message
Greetings Fellow Altrusans,
Our biennium 2023-2025 theme is “Bee the Change You Want to See in the World.” Let’s consider this theme as we plan our various service projects.
One project this month reaches across continents. Deb is in Africa, visiting Ethiopia and Kenya with Mirror of Hope. She will be delivering donated items from club members.
Locally, our club raised over $500 for the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters at the LemonAid fundraiser on July 20th. Thanks to all those who volunteered to serve lemonade and financially donated to this worthwhile cause.
I hope to see as many of you as possible at our annual Family Picnic on August 19th. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to come together, enjoy each other's company, and make a difference in our community. To continue our tradition every year, please bring donations of school supplies to the picnic.
With warmest regards,
Kathy
Mirror of Hope Tops the List!
The Threads Drive is the FIRST project listed in the 2024 Altrusa Service Newsletter! Way to go!! Many thanks to Deb for bringing this to us and delivering the thread as well as to everyone who contributed!

Greetings Altrusans!
I hope this message finds you all doing very well. This summer is passing so quickly! As I write this message, I welcome the rain and it is so nice to be back at home! I have been “on the road” these last few weeks, but I can’t complain! It is always a blessing to make new memories with family and friends! I have loved ones from “coast to coast” and it has been wonderful spending quality time together. I do miss all my Altrusa sisters and I hope to spend more time with you in 2025!
Supporting young readers is just one of the many attributes that describe an Altrusan. We consistently share our time supporting both students and educators in our local communities. Reading opens up worlds of imagination and knowledge for youth, offering them a passport to cultural, social, and emotional landscapes that extend far beyond their immediate environment. International Youth Day 2024, focusing on empowering young minds, beautifully complements the transformative power of reading. By embracing literature, youth can explore diverse narratives and ideas, fostering empathy and a deeper understanding of the world. Celebrating this day by promoting reading among young people not only enhances their cognitive and communication skills but also empowers them to become thoughtful, informed, and active global citizens. Please see the link below for more information about International Youth Day!

Our LemonAid Stand for CHKD Children with Cancer and other Blood Disorders was very successful.
Saturday, July 20, we set up Deb’s canopy and table on the lawn in front of Einstein Bros. Bagels at Virginia Beach Town Center.
Joanne brought her big orange cooler to mix and dispense lemonade. Ellen, Robyn, Jennifer and Barbara S. spread a yellow tablecloth and put up signs. The staff at Einstein Bros was very helpful, letting us have water and use the restrooms, and donating to CHKD.
CHKD provided the lemonade powder, cups, signs and pitchers. Our Tech Savvy members, Jennifer and Shari created small cards to hand out: one with information about CHKD LemonAid, and the other about Altrusa of Tidewater. Both cards had QR codes to donate online and provide more information about Altrusa of Tidewater. Elizabeth and her Aunt Carolyn, who was visiting from Texas, came at noon to serve lemonade and help clean up. We wore our Altrusa of Tidewater T-shirts to serve lemonade to the Town Center community. Several customers shared stories of how CHKD had saved the lives of their son or daughter.
Results: Our LemonAid Stand collected $156.36 in donations. $363.00 has been collected online by members who joined "our team” and shared the link with family and friends. Some members donated online. Team Altrusa of Tidewater has collected $519.36 for children. The total collected so far by all the LemonAid Stand teams in Tidewater is over $75,800. Another example of how small groups, working together, can accomplish big things
Mirror of Hope Donations
Here are some of the threads, fabrics, and other needed items our club has donated and Deb is delivering to communities involved with Mirror of Hope in Africa.
From Deb's Fb Page:
I also had the pleasure of visiting the Mirror of Hope C.B.Tailoring Program. A group I belong to, Altrusa International of Tidewater, collected thread to help support their efforts. These bright young mothers are learning a very marketable skill. I was able to see some of their work and will bring some back with me. They were very appreciative for the support from our Altrusa family.

Membership Update
It’s hard to believe that another club year has come and gone! We are now in our new year which began on June 1, 2024. In the past year we initiated two new members into our club. Danielle, sponsored by Jennifer was initiated in November 2023.
The second member initiated was Elizabeth who was sponsored by Barbara S. She became an Altrusan in February 2024. We are so happy that these ladies chose to become a part of our club!
We are indeed fortunate that two more ladies have committed to joining our ranks as well. Judy I, whose sponsor is Joanne and Dorothy whose sponsor is Cathy will be initiated at the meeting on September16, 2024 , 2024. Judy I and Dorothy have met with us several times in the last few months and are ready to go!

🤩🤩 A Note from Ellen, Recuperating at Home
Once again I've been blessed by a circle of friends and family who are carrying me through recovery from hip replacement with your flowers, food, and phone calls. During hours of hospitalization, Colleen and I shared at a level that we probably never would have if we had just been doing Altrusa meetings and service! I'm looking forward to my next season of adventures with all of you!! - Ellen ❤️
June, John and grandson Max spent a long weekend in Boston for the 4th of July. Standing on the balcony shown above June's head in this picture, a state official read the Declaration of Independence to the large crowd gathered for the annual event.
Audravette Jackson, shared information about volunteerism in Virginia Beach during our July meeting. She is married to Avery Jackson, son of our dear member Marian who passed in 2018. They have a 5-year-old daughter.

President Linda is continuing Immediate Past President Kathy book challenge and we want you to be a part of it. President Linda firmly believe that literacy is the number one focus for Altrusa and we want to continue to enhance that commitment. Our ultimate goal is to enhance the lives of others ONE BOOK AT A TIME! The challenge is for Altrusans to distribute one million books and/or devote 500,000 literacy service hours to our communities during the 2023-2025 biennium. So how can you participate?
Develop a signature literacy project (or expand on an existing one) that will continue to grow and develop into the future. Large and small clubs alike can participate in this challenge.
2. Assign a record keeper to keep track of the number of books you distribute AND/OR the number of service hours you spend (for example reading to children, the elderly, participating in a book exchange … something that works for you, your club and your community).
3. Carry the project over through the next club year.
4. Send your numbers (for both years) to the International Service Committee before
June 1, 2025. The easiest way to record this is to record each time you club donates books so you don’t forget any!
5. Sit back and relish in the fact that you are making a difference …. ONE BOOK AT A TIME.
Remember the end goal is to enhance the lives of others. And the simple gift of a book to a child who has never had one can help eradicate illiteracy and give these children a chance to succeed in life. Will you accept the challenge and join our movement? We all know that Altrusans R.O.C.K. and what better want to REALIZE OPPORTUNITY, CREATE KINDNESS than to create intentional acts of kindess by donating books. As Altrusans we can make a difference! We can change lives – sometimes the book you donate is the only one a child can call their own! Let’s help others develop a passion for reading that will last a lifetime!
