Welcome to spring! With the new season comes a reawakening and reopening. We are facing another transition, re-entering social spaces for some of us. It is completely normal to feel reluctant and nervous about seeing friends and family in person. Our survey at the April meeting shows most all our club is fully vaccinated and so we are going to hold an in-person club meeting at JoKell on May 17, with a link to Zoom included.
For me, it was Mother’s Day when I felt ready to begin venturing out into public spaces. As we sat at a table with my family, I noticed that I was feeling uneasy, feeling a tightness in my belly. I practiced gentle self-talk, reminding myself that I was safe. The grandchildren left their masks in place before and after we ate, youngsters learned their lesson so well that it seemed natural for them!
As we begin small exposures over the next weeks, and have a hug and “normal spaced” conversation with vaccinated friends, please remain aware some will not be comfortable and, so it feels new. But after a year of thinking, hearing, and teaching myself that this is dangerous behavior (rightly so with nearly 600,000 Americans dead), I now get to teach myself that I am safe and I can do it.
We have been through multiple traumatic experiences that have shaken our grounding, sense of safety, and isolated us from the people and things we love the most. Now is the time to slowly de-sensitize ourselves.
Tips for re-entry once you are vaccinated:
-start small, perhaps meeting a friend indoors, having a cup of tea outdoors on a patio, or taking a trip overnight to your favorite mountain town, schedule a massage or other nurturing experience, all depending on your comfort level
-Breathe, and mentally tell your body you are safe and ok
-Do it even if it feels awkward at first, your body will learn to adjust -engage in daily self-care practices that reduce your anxiety
-get more help and support from family, friends, groups, and others. It is a sign of strength to ask for help.
District Two conference met on Zoom in April and we will share some of that at the May club meeting. Fortunately, we can all consider attending International Convention in July in Charlotte, NC!
I look forward to a new year and I thank all of you for supporting our club this past year. As you pay your dues to Kathy this month, know that we appreciate your support and that together we will continue to serve our community and build on our friendships!

Greetings to all and Happy May!
Spring is here and what a blessing this weather has been. In a span of a week, we have had a taste of summer, spring showers, and the joy of a crisp breeze to cool us off! The old saying, about living in Virginia, is “if you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes”!
Happy Belated Mother’s Day to all and I hope you enjoyed your special day. Regardless if you are a mother, I hope you enjoyed the day; spending time with or cherishing those special times together with your Mom or that significant person who made a difference in your life.
May 15th is recognized, by the United Nations and Altrusa, as the International Day of Families. In 2021, the day will focus on how new technologies and social media has impacted the well-being of families. I am certain many different views are shared on both the positive and negative effects of technology, especially when we are living through a pandemic. I am thankful for Zoom and how it has allowed our children to continue learning and for families & friends to remain connected.
A little bit of history, “The International Day of Families, on May 15, is an occasion to reflect on the work started during 1994 and to celebrate the importance of families, people, societies and cultures around the world. It has been held every year since 1995”. To read please visit https://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/un/international-day-of-families As Altrusans, we understand the importance of family and community. Thank you for continuing to serve others, extend kindness, give generously! You are appreciated and cherished by all who know you!
Please have a wonderful month of May and I am looking forward to seeing everyone, “Face to Face” very soon!
Take Care,
Tracey
On Thursday, May 6th Club members met with the residents and staff of Hope Village to learn various ways to make pizza. The residents made their own homemade sauce and yeast crust. While the crust was set aside to rise they were able to make pizzas from Naan bread and English muffins. The ladies learned that these items and others were readily available at the food banks that they utilized while living at the village, thus providing a cost-effective way to make pizza.
In addition, they learned the costs of homemade pizza versus carry out and also grocery store pizza. They learned the nutritional values of various kinds of crusts and toppings and how to make pizza a part of a balanced diet.
When the dough was ready they pressed it into a pizza pan and topped their pizza with all kinds of toppings. Each resident then carried their two trays of pizzas to their homes for baking. This lesson was lots of fun and a rewarding experience for both Hope Village residents and Tidewater Altrusans.
The book club will meet Saturday, June 12 to discuss The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz by Erik Larsen. Erik Larsen’s style of nonfiction makes the reader feel as if they were experiencing history. His extensive research is apparent through vivid descriptions and details.
Barbara and Don Speight wanted to share a special Pansy they found in their garden.
