A 'Work Order' corresponds to the older style 'service ticket' or 'installation work order'. The new 'interactive' Work Order is intended to replace the older, printed-on-paper work order, and it is designed to be edited in the field by a mechanic (although it can be edited by office personnel as well with permission). The customer can sign the interactive Work Order with a stylus right on the mechanic's tablet or phone.
Each 'schedule entry' (job cost entry) can have one work order related to it. A schedule entry is created first, then, if needed, a work order is created for that schedule entry. Changes to work orders - even changing the mechanic on the work order - do not affect schedule entries at all. The following rules detail the logic for how changes to schedule entries affect work orders:
For UNPOSTED work orders:
1) If a schedule entry is deleted, the corresponding (UNPOSTED) work order is deleted.
2) If the date on a schedule entry is changed, the 'scheduled' date on the (UNPOSTED) work order is changed as well.
3) If you attempt to change the order number on a schedule entry that has a work order (whether unposted OR posted) on it, that change will fail; the system will warn you and it will not allow the change. You'll have to delete the entry, then re-add it to the schedule.
4) If you change the mechanic on the schedule entry, the mechanic on the work order will NOT be updated automatically.
5) You CAN delete an unposted work order.
For POSTED work orders:
1) You cannot delete a schedule entry, or change the mechanic on a schedule entry that already has a POSTED work order; the system will warn you and it will not allow the deletion.
2) You CANNOT delete a posted work order.
3) You CAN change the date on a schedule entry that has a posted work order, but this won't (obviously) change the posting date or the signature date of the work order.
