Welcome to 6th ELA at Buffalo Ridge,
Hello,
Welcome to middle school! I am glad to have the privilege of teaching your child this year for ELA. I have been teaching at the charter school for 17 years and am passionate about reading and writing. Together, this can be the best year ever.
Weekly Outline:
Weekly Nonfiction Passages: Every week there is a new 2-page text. Students have daily work related to the texts. They are given these passages in class on Monday and posted on Google classroom.
Monday: Read the passage and take Google Quiz
Tuesday: Text evidence which means finding specific sentences in the text and marking with the directed colors.
Wednesday: Skill page
Thursday: Integrate knowledge video and final test. Students can use their passages and all completed work on the final test.
IReady: Each week students need to complete two “My Path” lessons using their Chromebooks. They will get 100 practice points for passing two lessons. Students can earn extra credit by completing extra lessons.
Independent Reading Program: IR: Students must always read and have a book with them. Each week by Friday, they are expected to write a summary of what they read that week. This is worth 40 points; 20 for having the book they have signed in with them and 20 for the written summary. Students must sign their books in the classroom with me. All books must be signed in before Friday to receive points during reading time.
Students will be given class time on Friday to read their IR book and work on the weekly summary.
We will also be reading novels as a class, short stories, nonfiction texts, and many articles from the Scholastic Scope magazine. The first novel is called Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Parks.
This year is already off to a great start and I look forward to having your child in ELA class this year.
Read all 15 SSYRA books, earn brag tags, and go on a field trip at the end of the year!
