School Council

Our School Councillors:

Our Manifesto:

At Western House Academy, the School Council like to influence change; we realise that we are the ‘voice’ of all the pupils in our school. We are a very committed and responsible team of leaders and dedicate lots of our time to represent the views of our fellow pupils. Our behaviour is exceptional and this is why we have been voted in as WHA school councillors by our class peers.

We are going to work closely with Mrs Snowden, Mrs Sharma, our teachers and of course our class pupils to make Western House Academy a school where the ‘voice’ of the children is heard and acted upon.

The school values will play a big part of how we work together as a team; we are ambitious as we want to make a difference in school.  We will be using the school value of courage as we will be standing up and voicing other people’s opinions.  Respecting other people’s ideas and wishes is also a Western House Academy value we shall develop and enhance as school councillors.

As school councillors, we are going to meet our local MP to gain advice about how to be good representatives and gain some knowledge about his role and how this can help us to develop and understand our role as a school councillor.

Finally, to really consolidate our understanding of democracy, we are going to visit The Houses of Parliament in the Spring Term.

Our roles as School Council Members include:

Autumn Term update:

'We have been really busy trying to buy more learn pads for accelerated reader!  We all decided that the best idea is to get all the children in school to bring chocolate in.  We could then sell the chocolate in small bags for £1.

First of all we had to tell all the children in our classes to bring chocolate and sweets in.

You won’t believe how much chocolate and sweets children brought in! Thank you parents! We bagged all the chocolates and sweets into hundreds of bags. We asked all the children in our classes to bring in £1 or more to buy the bags. We sold the bags to the children over a week.  It was hard work, but we really enjoyed it!  We also made sure we stayed in our year bubbles.  We are  really proud of ourselves, this is the first time we have all worked together in a big team!

We will let you all know how much money the school has made after the holidays.  It is going to take us a long time to count all the money!'

Spring Term update:

'In our first meeting, we discussed ways to fundraise for Ukraine and each class came back with ideas. This was then fed back to Mrs Snowden. In our next meeting, the head pupils came and spoke to us. They asked us to help fundraise for a whole - school reading swap box. We liked this idea and agreed as a school council team that this was a good idea. We then decided to raise money by holding an Easter egg sale. All classes got involved and brought in lots of Easter eggs which we sold for money to benefit everyone. In our final meeting, we created posters to promote this around the school. We had a fun competition, to see what class brought in the most got a prize. Finally, we discussed the job role of a school councillor and our importance around the school. '

Summer Term update:

'In our first meeting, we discussed what the Houses of Parliament is and how to hold a vote. We learned how important the Houses of Parliament is. Our next meeting was very exciting as we had an online virtual workshop with all the school councillors and Year 6 head pupils and prefects. We enjoyed seeing the House of Commons and House of Lords and where all the important people sit. We learned how decisions are made in the Houses of Parliament and we liked asking lots of questions to the man  leading the workshop that we and our classes had thought of. Finally, we wrote up what we had learned during the workshop and answered the question how does being a school councillor link to being an MP and we all had lots of   ideas saying how important our role is. We then discussed how we had made changes throughout the year to improve the school.'
