Music Mentors

Our Music Mentors:

Our Manifesto:

We play a pivotal role in influencing and driving forward the learning of music across the school.  As mentors, we use the values of teamwork and ambition to develop creative ways that will engage our peers and assist them in learning how to become better musicians. We use a range of creative and innovative platforms to reach the whole school, such as BoomBoxRadio shows. Here, we plan and record shows which introduce the children to a range of different musicians from different cultures and musical genres. We also create topic based shows on the school’s curriculum Project Based Learning. The whole school community can access the BoomBoxRadio shows through Google Classroom and via mixcloud both in and out of school.

The role of mentoring younger children also forms a core part of our job as pupil leaders and this ranges from creating instructional videos for how to play musical parts to ‘live’ teaching and mentoring in our own classes as well as in extracurricular clubs. Our aim is to help younger children develop a growth mind-set in learning how to play different instruments, which reinforces the school’s focus on ‘mastery’ in music.

By having high standards of musicianship ourselves, we, as music mentors, aim to influence the next generation of children to become more proficient musicians and have a deeper knowledge and understanding of a wide range of musical styles and genres. By being comfortable on a range of instruments ourselves, we are able to model exemplary work for the rest of the school to aspire to, thus helping to continue the development of musicianship across this school.

Our roles as Music Mentors include:

Autumn Term update:

As Music Mentors, this term, we have created the 2021-2022 BBR (Boom Box Radio) team and attained the nickname, 'One Take Crew'. We have recorded four musicians of the month and four main shows which are: Value Show, Halloween Show, Well-Being Day Show and Christmas Show.

In class, Music Mentors volunteer by helping students seeking help and stuff like not liking singing assemblies. We also promote BBR shows, competitions and many other things.

Next term we have plans to make many new BBR shows; even one un-scripted. Additionally, we plan to design a BBR board, outside the Year 2 classrooms. We plan to make instructional videos to show other years.

Spring Term update:

'We have started to mentor younger year groups, such as the Year 3 Musical Collective. We will be running a summer club for the Year 2 children based on percussion instruments on a Wednesday after school. Each week we will be teaching them a different instrument.

We have created a reward chart related to BBR to encourage children to listen to our shows. We have recorded 7 shows on BBR which include Musician of the Month as well as topic shows.

We continue to help out in Singing Assemblies in our Year group and have started to mentor in the Year 2 Singing Assembly. We have also started to volunteer to come to Nursery, too.'

Summer Term update:

'In this term we have progressed with our clubs including the year 3 musical collective and year 2 drumming club! We have earnt responsibility by guiding these clubs and even leading them by ourselves without the guidance of Mr Robinson. Another one of our biggest achievements is reaching 21 BBR shows altogether! That is the most BBR shows done by any year who did the club of BBR and we are extremely proud of this major achievement.

Within the year 6 production, the music mentors have been very productive by setting up the hall with the technical panel - which controls lights, sound and microphones. This links to the control panel in BBR and how we recently started taking responsibility for it. Also linking on to BBR, we wrote our own scripts which hasn't been done much in the past by other teams. Lastly, we helped with celebration Saturday by organising the instruments and taking them to the hall when needed. We supervised the children using them and guided some of the practices for the songs and dances.'
