Curriculum Ambassadors

Our Curriculum Ambassadors:

Our Manifesto:

‘Curriculum leaders’ is a new role within Western House Academy.  This has been created following the introduction of Votes for Schools, last year.  In 2020, 43% of pupils in our school voted that the curriculum did not reflect them.  In October 2021, the Votes for School question considered, ‘Do we celebrate our differences enough?’ and, although there was an increase in pupils feeling that their heritage and culture is celebrated, we know that we can still do more.

We are a diverse collection of pupils that can bring our own knowledge and experiences to the group to ensure all pupil groups are celebrated and all cultures and religions are explored.  Our first task has been to develop the assemblies themes to ensure that all religions and cultures are celebrated.  This year we will also be meeting with subject leaders to support them in developing diversity within their curriculum.

Our roles as Curriculum Ambassadors include:

Autumn Term update:

'This term we have helped to plan the assembly rota for Spring term. We have ensured these include cultural differences and diversity; a few examples of our assemblies are Ramadan, World Braille Day and Chinese New Year. Some of us also led a whole school assembly on Diwali. Those of us chosen to plan and share this assembly were Hindus and Sikhs who celebrate this festival so that we could share our expertise. We also met with governors on Governor in school day to explain the work we have been doing with Mrs Kearney.'

Spring Term update:

'As curriculum leaders, we have the lead in diversity based assemblies to raise awareness of different religions. We allow the students in our group who follow that faith, or have a friend of classmate who know, it to carry out the assembly.  We have also discussed the Knowledge Organisers and if we have to continue it. We have organised assemblies for the next few months until the end of the year.'

Summer Term update:

'During the summer term, we have re-asked every class to consider the progress we have made with increasing diversity in our curriculum.  We created a selection of questions on Google Forms to gather this information and have now looked at the answers and created a feedback form with the successes and next steps. We have also discussed our views on the Whole Class Feedback sheets.  We all felt that these were helpful to us in our learning.'
