Respond and Confront

With this project, I responded and confronted the heated debate, "pancakes vs waffles" with fellow classmate Jackson Carr. I personally believe that waffles are overall better than pancakes. However, instead of just making waffles, I included waffle's notorious partner, chicken, in one of the best food industry duos, "chicken and waffles" by also making a chicken leg. I made the waffles by making finger-width slabs of clay where I then took a square shapes wooden rod where I created those symmetrical squares within the slab then traced out a circle and cut it out. I created the squares before making them spherical because I didn't want to squish the sides of the pancakes and make them uneven. For the chicken leg, I made a big slab of clay where I then just worked with it and slowly made it more and more into the rough shape of a chicken leg. I ended up glazing the chicken leg SM-11 (White) and C-36 (Iron) and for the waffles, I mixed two colors — SM-11 (white) and SM-63 (yellow).

I really enjoyed this topic. I was able to do something that was fun but challenging in different ways. I was able to make something very unique that I haven't made yet in both ceramic classes — food. I also enjoyed competing with Jackson as he was making pancakes. My favorite part of the project was the waffle that I personally took a bite out of with my mask. By doing that, it gave the waffles some realism and it actually looked like a real bite even though I had my mask on, it still gave some obvious teeth marks. One thing I did struggle with however was that I initially made a to-go box for the chicken and waffles where I was going to write the info needed for this project. However, in one way or another, the box was surprising more difficult than originally thought. The box ended up getting destroyed in the kiln due to another student's project exploding.
