Sgraffito

The main idea that guided my artwork was the ocean. I knew that I wanted to do two subjects of the ocean because the ocean is really important to me and my family. When I sculpted the face it was just for fun, then I decided to make it into a clown.

To make these play slabs I cut out two circles as perfect as I can get them. Then I used the Sgraffito ink and painted multiple coats on. I used multiple different tools to carve out the white and used a paint brush to wipe away the extra clay dust. Then for the face I just sculpted out the features.

The process to make the tiles was pretty straightforward. To make the circles I used a cup to make them as perfect as I could. At first I was going to leave the face plain, but then I got the idea to carve a clown face. It was sort of hard to carve the face because I had to go around the features but eventually I carved everything that I wanted to.
