Hanging Sun

14 x 15 x 3"

Cardboard, paper, magazines, foam beads, string

For this project, I knew I didn't want to do an animal. I know that most people do animals but that wasn't the first thing that came to mind for me. I really like drawing suns and oceans, but in a non-realistic way, so that's what I did. `I haven't done something like this all year, but most of the time this year I drew something having to do with nature, so this fits in with that theme. There's no meaning behind this artwork, other than the fact that I think the sun is so beautiful, and I find it interesting how it is so powerful that it can light our whole world.

To make this work, first I made the circular center. I made this out of crumpled paper and LOTS of tape. I wanted this to be the perfect size so I compacted it down into the shape I wanted. Next, I traced 6 different rays, but I made sure they were pretty much all the same size. This was difficult because I had to make sure that each ray was even so they could all fit around the sphere. After that, I used hot glue and tape to secure the rays to the sphere. Then I used magazine cutouts for the sphere and regular paper for the rays. I found that my sun looked a little bland so I added the foam beads around the center and added string to each of the sun rays. Overall I used a lot more materials than expected but I like how it turned out.

At first, I thought I was going to use wire to make the structure of my sun. But I soon found I hated the way that looked and started over using paper and cardboard. I hated the wire unit so I don't know why I thought it would be a good idea for this unit. Next, I was going to use fabric to cover my structure, but then I didn't have any yellow or orange fabric that I could use so instead I opted for magazines and paper. The next idea I had was to cover my whole structure in magazine pieces, but I found that It would take way too long to cut out only yellow and orange pieces, so I decided to use just yellow paper to cover my sun rays.
