Tile Project

Final

For this project we had to make one mold in order to make four tiles that fit together in some way. I knew I wanted to make something involving the ocean for this project, and started thinking of different designs. When designing this, I knew the "interesting" part of my project was going to be the 3D objects on top of my tiles.

To start this project I first made my mold. This went smoothly and I thankfully had no issues with getting my tiles out of the mold. I made sure there were no undercuts to avoid this. I made four tiles relatively quickly and smoothly. The bulk of my time was used to create my 3D lobster boat. This was a lot harder than I expected. I first made a demo to decide what technique I wanted to use. I first tried carving out the hollow part of the boat but that did not work, so I started over and made each side of the boat and attached them. Since the boat was pretty small it was hard to work on it and be precise. I then made two buoys and a duck to go on the other tiles. These three figures were easy to make but again it was difficult to work with such small amounts of clay. For the glazes I used C-21 for the water, C-41 for the duck and buoys, PC-27 for the boat, and SM-63 for the sand on the corners of my tiles. I mixed SM-63 with a white glaze to lighten the yellow a bit.  Overall I am super happy with how these tiles turned out and I wouldn't change anything about my process!
