Cracked Masterpiece

For this project, we had to make a multiple-pinch pot form. For my project, I made a functional vase with a cracked design on it. I instantly knew I wanted to make some oval-shaped pots. I first sketched the basic form and then once again I struggled with what design I should make. I ended up deciding to make some sort of cracked design for my vase. When I started using clay I first made the top pinch pot. I spent a lot of time smoothing this and making it as flat on the top as I could. Next, I moved to the bottom and middle forms of my vase. When I worked with this clay it was way too wet and very hard to form, and I needed to wait a while before I could even attach the pinch pots together. Once each form was made I carved holes in each form before attaching them together to make a vase. I spent some time carving a few cracks into my pot until I liked the way it looked. The reason I chose to intentionally add a crack in my work is that most people don't intentionally add "mistakes." I tried to make my pots as smooth as possible, but then I added pretty jagged cracks into them.

I like the way my pot turned out and I think all the time I spent smoothing really paid off. If I had to do something different I think I would add more forms to this pot to make it a bit more interesting.
