Maine
Acrylic and Paint Markers on Canvas
18 x 24"
I chose to make this painting of Maine. I chose this because I have lived here all my life and most of my family lives here. Maine means a lot to me and I hadn't done anything like this before. I chose to outline the counties just to help me divide it into sections. I also chose to put the cool tones like blues and purples below the state to look like water, and warm tones above to look like the sun.
To make this artwork I used acrylic and paint markers on canvas. I used the three primary colors, the three secondary colors, and the six tertiary colors. Mixing the 84 colors was the most time consuming part of this project. It was difficult because the paint would dry, but I wasn't done using it yet. I really liked using acrylic though, it goes on very smooth and I like the way it looks when there is multiple coats of paint.
To make this art I actually made lots of mistakes. First I drew the whole outline, but on the wrong side of the canvas. This took me so long because I freehanded the whole thing. So I was very frustrated that I made this mistake. So then I restarted and traced what I had using the light table. After that I was pretty much caught up, and I started to paint. I quickly learned that mixing paint takes a long time, and that I would have to work a lot outside of class to finish. I used a few study halls and some time at home on top of class time and I finished the project on time.
