For this formative, we experimented with the coil technique. This project was a good way for us to get used to using this technique in a creative way. We had to make a pot and then carve a design of our choice into the pot. My pot ended up having an orange geometric design. Using the coil technique was very new for me and it took me a bit to get the hang of it. The coil technique is relatively simple but I spent too much time on each individual coil. First I started with a slab that I built on top of. I made pretty thick coils which I wrapped around the base until the pot was the height I liked. Once I had my form, I used the underglaze called "real orange," before carving. Next, I carved into my pot. At first, I didn't know exactly what design I wanted, but as I started to carve I made this really pretty geometric design. This pot feels really random to me. I couldn't tell you why I chose bright orange or made a geometric design, but I like how it turned out.
Overall I think the finished project is successful. For my first time using the coil technique, I like how my pot turned out. My favorite part is the simple yet intriguing design, but next time I think I would choose a different color underglaze.
