Negative Space Leaf drawing

Autumn Breeze

8 x 16

I started this piece by going outside and collecting several leaves. I then traced them onto the paper interacting with the border. We only drew that outline of the leave since it was going to be focused on the negative space. I then took colored pencils and used red, brown, and orange. (fall colors) and colored in all the negative space. I drew lightly so the colors were pale, and started around the leaves and shaded out with each color on a different leaf. When the colors met in the middle I tried to ease them into one another to make a good transition. After all the negative space had color, I went in with a thin sharpie and drew little pumpkins and leaves scattered around.

Some elements of art that I used were; line, space, color, and value. the way that I used the color and value together created unity in the negative space, It also created contrast against the parts of the paper that were left white (the leaves). All these things also created emphasis on the negative space instead of the leaves, which was the main goal of this project.

My drawing really gives of an fall vibe, from the colors and patterns that I used. I am most proud of how the negative space almost looks like its popping out, because of the way I shaded. I also really like how you can tell that they are leaves even though the focus was not on the leaves. One thing that I struggled with was deciding what do do in the negative space. When I started coloring I had no idea what the end product was going to look like, so I just decided as I went, and it turned out better than I expected.
