Inspired Dada Collage

1)

I created this collage inspired by the dada art movement. Looking at some of the dada pieces I noticed a theme of repetitive images. I also noticed that a lot of the colleges had an evident story to go with it. I tried to recreate these elements in my collage. I started out by looking through some magazines. I started gathering ideas on what I could use in my collage. I finally decided to use hands, this was pretty easy to find a lot of in the magazines. I then got the idea to incorporate dogs and cats too. At this point I didn't really know what my composition or story would be, but I thought that it would come to me as I went. Once I had all my images cut out I started to try different arrangements on the page. I decided to go with all the hands reaching in from all around, almost trying to pat/grab the pets. The story that I was trying to portray in this is that people cope differently with the same situation. For example, some of the cats and dogs are enjoying the excessive attentions, and others are annoyed by it.

I decided to recreate my collage using pen and watercolor. I started by sketching out the hands, dogs, and cats in pencil. My original collage was very overwhelming so I just chose some of the pictures to make bigger. Once I had it all sketched out I drew over the pencil in black pen. After that I added watercolor in. I tried to replicate the green in the background as well as I could. I added colors loosely and "messy."

I used line and color to unity and balance. Before I added the color it looked choppy and unbalanced and ununified. The color connected all the drawings together.

One thing I struggled with was making the hands look right. They were difficult, but after a while I was satisfied with how they looked.
