Extended Blind Contour Drawing

Blind Ambition

12in x 18in

I created this blind contour drawing using a sharpie. I traced the lines of my hand with my eyes and attempted to copy it with my pencil. I then did the same with my other hand and my face. We could not look at the paper and couldn't pick up the pencil. At this point it looked like three random squiggles on the page so we had freedom to add more to it, in order to create more unity, balance, and possibly tell a story. My face and hands were scattered on the paper so I did another face and some other facial features (all blindly). Once I was satisfied with it, I painted it with water colors.

Some elements of art that I used were line, color, shape, and space. These three put together made my drawing unified and balanced. The color tied the whole picture together and I emphasized certain parts by making them brighter, like the yellow and orange face. All the random looking lines make it feel fun and abstract.

My drawing doesn't tell a specific story, by looking at it, every person might be able to create their own ideas on what it means. I am most proud of the way I painted it. I like how it is not precise/ in the lines, but is more free looking. I also like the bright colors that make each part pop. The part that I struggled most with was deciding how to create more unity, what to draw to complete it. I eventually just started drawing, not really having a plan, and it came out better that I expected.
