Maine Junior Duck Stamp

Artist Statement 

I researched many different types of ducks before deciding on the Fulvous Whistling duck. I liked the colors of them. They have natural colors but are not plain. I made my art as realistic as possible. I did two males in their correct habitat which is shallow freshwater. 

I started by sketching the composition out with pencils before going in with colored pencils. I used the prisma color colored pencils for the whole thing and taught myself how to use them on top of each other and how to make them blend nicely.

  I sketched it out a few times before deciding on a final composition. I was originally thinking of having the swimming duck be farther in the background and facing more straight on. I changed it to fill up more of the space and to hopefully make the composition more interesting.  As I went on using the colored pencils I learned how to use them most effectively in order to be efficient and have them look good.
