Gridded Value Self Portrait

8x12

ME

We drew our self portraits with graphite pencils. I started by selecting a picture of myself that had a full range of value to draw. I then gridded out the photo and the drawing paper, so the drawing would be as accurate as possible. This also helped me think of it in smaller pieces of a bigger task.

An element of art that In my drawing that I used was value. The value created unity and contrast for the face as a whole. I also used value to create an illusion on texture/movement in the hair. Value also gave it depth, so it didn't appear flat.

I am proudest of the eyes and the hair, in the way that they look pretty identical to the photo. I really struggled with the nose. I had trouble getting it to look like the photo, and not like I was flaring my nostrils. I think that by the end I got it pretty close, but it took some time.

Art history research

We researched a certain artist or art movement and made a slide show. I did Stuart davis, a cubism artist. We then made a background for our self portraits, inspired by the artist. I started by blanding green and yellow watercolors in the background, and then I drew some geometric patterns with pen on top. These shapes were inspired by the shapes in Stuart Davis' work.
