Artist Statement

The main idea that guided this artwork was to create a piece that showed off 84 different colors. The way we showed these 84 different colors was completely up to us. I chose to create an ocean scene with my 84 colors in 12 different buoys. The ocean is very sentimental to me because I grew up on the ocean, with a lobsterman as a dad. I also decided to add a dock and some trees this came from the idea of making it look like my grandparent's backyard. I grew up with my grandparents living on the ocean so being able to add that into my work makes it way more sentimental.

This work was made with acrylic paint on canvas. First I started off by creating a rough sketch on printer paper. After this, I re-sketched it on my canvas. This made it easier for me to know where the paint needed to go. To start the painting I started with my ocean. I started with the ocean sense the buoys would sit on top of the water and it's easier to paint a solid background than add on top. After this, I started making my buoys. To do this I had to mix all my paint to get the 84 colors needed. I mixed the paint one color at a time, then painting it onto my buoys in the outline I had created. After finishing all 12 of my buoys I started on my sky. I painted the sky first because it would be easier to add my trees, rocks and birds ontop of the sky rather than painting, the trees ontop of the sky. After doing two layers of my sky I added in my trees, I added green then a shade and a tint of that same color along with an outline to make the trees fit with the painting. After I was done with majority of my base I added in my rocks and then my dock after that.

Creating this art was easy for majority of it. It did get difficult when creating the sections of the buoys, as I was planning it out I didn't think of how difficult it would be to paint such small sections. To solve this issue I used a smaller brush and made sure it was mostly dry when I was painting with it, this insured my paint didn't run and that I could get all of the shades and tints into my buoys.
