Soft Slab Construction

INSPO

The goal of this project was to create a set of mugs that went together with one or more details. I chose to make 4 mugs that all had the same style. I used bright colors with simple designs to make this happen. To make this I used the regular clay tools with extra use of the smoothing tool.

To make these pieces of art I used the soft slab construction technique. This technique involves wrapping a cylinder container in a slab of clay. Then you use the inner newspaper layer to remove a perfect cylinder. Then I smoothed out both inside and outside of my form, and cut it down to my desired shape. After this I used the coil technique to make my handle. The handles where simple coils that made shapes that matched with one other pot. These handles allowed for my pots to have matching aspects to make them look like they belong together. Lastly I glazed my pots and made then match with one small pot and one big almost as if they are a set.

The biggest road block of this project was making sure the pots looked like they belonged together. Making the 4 pots was quite easy but adding handles to match exactly added a level of challenge. Getting 2 handles that look like same but with different scale was difficult, to overcome this issue I took time to perfect the shape and get my desired look. Overall I really enjoy how these pots came out, and I enjoyed being able to see my artwork, and be proud of it after spending a long time.
