This assignment was to create a coil pot, and use sgraffito skills we learned earlier in the year to create a coil and carve art project. This project was supposed to be unique to you. I choose to make my art with a simple squiggly line carving with dots. I choose to do this because I enjoy the way simple carvings make the pot elevated. To make this project I used carving tools, and a spinny stand for my art. The stand made it easier for me to move the pot without warping the shape of my pot.
To create this project I used the coil technique. This technique involves squeezing out coils, and spiraling them up to create a form. To begin I started by making a base circle. This base circle made it so I could have a base to build my coils up from. I started adding coils untill I had about three, then I smoothed my art and added three more. I continued this process untill my pot was at my desired height. Once it reached that heigh I went over it several times untill it was as smooth as I wanted. Next I let it dry untill it was leather hard. At this stage I could then carve into my pot to give it the carved look it needed to have. Once I was done with this I let it be bisk fired, then glazed it.
I really enjoyed making this art peice because it shows how nice art can look even with a simple design and not much delicate work. I choose to glaze my pot this color because I thought with the simple design of the pot a pop of color would give it the look it needs. With this art I struggled with making my carvings not too deep and causing it to affect the overall shape of the pot. I am the proudest of the overall way it turned out, I think the color and style go very well together.
