Sgraffito Tile

FISH

In this project we were told to create a clay sgraffito tile unique to you. For this I decided I would create a fish, I choose a fish because I enjoy summer and I have always grown up with fishing. A fish was too plain though as I could create it very quickly and use little skill. So to make my fish have more detail I added bubbles around it to give it more depth and contrast between dark and light. I also added spots on my fish where there were designs so my fish wouldn't be solid blue.

To create this art I started by laying out a slab about a thumb thickness. Once I laid out this slab I let it dry slightly before adding on top my underglaze. I then let my underglaze sit for a few classes before I started to carve into it. Leaving my clay sitting for a few days allowed my clay to dry out slightly which made it so when I carved the clay would carve easier. Then I started carving, I started with my fish then went onto the designs inside the fish. After my fish was done I went in and added bubbles untill I enjoyed the way it looked.

I really enjoyed creating this sgraffito tile. One thing I really enjoyed about creating my tile was how I could advance the skill I learned freshman year and make a better tile than I had before. If I were to do this project again I would try to create a peice of art that was very intracit and had lots of detail.
