Artist Statement
The main idea that guided this artwork was to create a tree that showed off spring. I wanted to show spring by adding color as if it was blossoms. Sense this project was to use materials you had I used marker caps. Mrs. Medsker has a lot of dead markers in her dead marker bin so I could find varieties of colors, shapes, and sizes. I wanted to show spring through my art because Maine had a beautiful spring this year so why not embrace it through my art.
To make this art I mainly used wire and marker caps, but to create my design I used graphite on drawing paper. The first step was to make a life size drawing of my idea so it would be easier to translate to my actual project. After I was done creating my design I measured out 12 equal size pieces of metal. Next I made 6 groups of 2 wires and twisted them together. Once I had 6 twisted wire groups I twisted all 6 together and it made my trunk of my tree. once it was twisted I separated the top. Once I had my scraggly looking tree I went and found 12 marker caps(6 colors) to create my blossoms. Once I had my 12 marker caps I drilled holes in each of them so I could loop my wire through and it would look part of the tree. Once I finished this step I had to play with my sculpture to make it stand.
This project was mostly easy besides from a few step backs. One big step back was in my idea. I originally planned on using bottle caps for my blossoms, I couldn't find bottle caps in the number and colors. So I tweaked my idea and used marker caps instead. Sense we are in an art room there are lots of dead markers making it easy for me to find many colors and caps. Next my second step back was breaking a drill bit. I dropped the drill and broke a drill bit meaning I had to find a new one.
