Zentangle Value Strip

Gel Pen on Drawing Paper

The main idea that guided my artwork would be my silhouette ostrich, this contour gave me a chance to think about what designs and what values would look good in a particular area. This zentangle ostrich also gave me a chance to think about which patterns I would use where and sort of how I could create a set of values that went from dark to light and looked smooth. For instance, in my 6th design section, I decided I would draw lots of triangles and then it somehow turned into 3d triangles and shapes. I liked this project because you can use your creativity to create new designs and patterns.

The materials I used were a sharpie pen and drawing paper throughout this process. I used the pen a few different ways, starting with the darker values, I had to draw and leave only a small amount of white space and aim for mostly darker values. This way, I had to draw many lines, taking more time. On the other hand, though, I also had to draw lightly using my pen, aiming for mostly white space since I had to have a shade of dark to light values. This made it seem like I was using two different pens or at least more than one, but it was just the way I used the pen that made the values look different.

The process I went through to draw this zentangle ostrich consisted of many things including thinking and rethinking what lines and designs I would use or not. My first step to this zentangle ostrich was to choose a silhouette animal or a rectangle value strip, I decided to go with the silhouette of an ostrich because I thought it looked cool with its long legs and neck. After I had decided that, I thought of designs and tried to contribute darker values, so I began with the legs and drew up to create a strip of values in order. I then added medium and lighter values, creating different patterns throughout the process.
