The Puffer Fish

Colored pencils and oil pastels on watercolor rag paper

8" diameter

"The Puffer Fish" revised

I was inspired to create The Puffer Fish from the project title, Designing with Dots or Circles. I wanted to use the watercolor rag paper because it was a circle and I've worked with it before as well. For the dots within the project, I wanted to include bubbles in the ocean and puffer fish, which look pretty similar to the shape of a circle. I wanted to push contrast, so I ended up coloring the bubbles with colored pencils rather than oil pastels. I also used several different colors consisting of black, dark blue, light blue, and several different shades of greens and purples within this art.

The materials I used for this project consisted of colored pencils, where I colored the bubbles and a little bit of the puffer fish. I also used oil pastels for the ocean and seafloor as well as the seaweed and plants at the bottom of the ocean. And I used watercolor rag paper for the surface of The Puffer Fish.

The process for this process took some time. For instance, I used two different materials consisting of colored pencils and oil pastels. My first step in this project was picking out which surface I'd use, I ended up using watercolor rag paper because it's a circle and I felt like the texture was cool to use. After this, I began with oil pastels to create the background, making sure to include circles for the bubbles. Once I finished with the ocean, I added the seafloor and plants to add more color and design. My last step in this process, once I got my constructive criticism was adding more details, like contrast, to The Puffer Fish. The second picture above shows my revisions and my final piece of work.
