Mapping Design

The Slopes

Colored pencils and oil pastels on drawing paper

9" x 12"

I was inspired to create my map from several different things. For the map aspect of this art piece, I drew out the lines of the docks at the boatyard where I work. Using black colored pencils for the map of the docks, I connected the lines together, creating an abstract design of black lines, having a contrast to the other colors within my art. From the black lines, I was inspired to create a mountain range like Sugarloaf or a mix of mountains since I like the outdoors and hiking.

The materials I used for my mapping design were colored pencils, specifically black colored pencils for the dock design. As well as many different colors of oil pastels to create the distant mountains behind the abstract design of a window and the interior of a house.

My process for my mapping design took several steps. For instance, my first step was figuring out what map I would create, I ended up creating a map design of the docks at which I work, where I walk every day I'm there. After I chose this map, I "beautiful oops'ed" it basically by creating a mountain range and blue sky within the lines of the docks. Once I finished drawing the mountains with the oil pastels, I could see that the web of black lines almost looked like the design of a window, so from that, I used warmer tones of colors for the interior wall inside the house.
