Extended Blind Contour Drawing

Extended Blind Contour Project

Drawing Paper and Oil Pastels

12" x 18"

The main idea that guided my work was definitely the blind contours, they gave me a chance to extend the art and add colors. Doing this project gave me an opportunity to build my skill in oil pastels, and how to shade oil pastels. This also gave me a chance to enhance my blind contouring although I realistically drew my hand somehow. I learned throughout this project that I need to draw my contours a bit bigger because then I would have a higher chance of adding more colors to each line. And create the contours to make them the main focus instead of all the other shades of colors the main focus.

The materials I used were 12" by 18" drawing paper and oil pastels. I used many different shades of oil pastel and I tried to layer each color on top of the other. For example, I shaded each color from the ocean and layered it, making the ocean look somewhat smooth. I also shaded the green colors for the forest and stayed from shading the blind contours because I wanted it to look sharp.

At the beginning of this process, I used oil pastels to draw two blind contour faces and a hand. Once I had finished that, I thought about which colors to add and where, so I drew long flowy blue hair for one of the face contours. As I looked at the piece of art from a different perspective, farther away, I realized that it looked like the ocean. So I began to fill in the beach and add a forest, the blind contours acted as islands, carefully coloring and shading each part to make it whole.  As well as smudging the pastels to make it look more blended on the edges.
