My inspiration for the "Curious Penguin" came from my liking for the Antarctic and the penguins living there. I've been wanting to make some animals with zentangles for the background for the sgraffito and I had an idea to make the clay sculpture the same animal, a penguin to match the idea of the cold Antarctic.

Some materials I used consisted of clay, tools for the clay, water, glaze, and the kiln for the final step of the sgraffito. For the clay sculpture, I also used these materials.

The process for the clay sgraffito took a few class periods, not as long as the clay sculpture though. This is because I had more intricate designed patterns on the entire penguin sculpture, rather than just the zentangles in the penguin sgraffito background. For my sculpture, I began with the idea of adding more patterns in the areas in which a penguin is white and fewer designs where the penguin is black. I filled in these areas with designs and then began to cook it and applied the glaze to then put it in the kiln again.
