The Very Hungry Caterpillar

84 shades and tints using a pallet on canvas

12" x 18"

I got the inspiration to paint this from the assignment of having to paint 84 shades and tints. I was inspired to paint The Very Hungry Caterpillar because I've always liked the book, and I thought it would be really fun to paint this caterpillar in particular.  I also wanted to paint this because a caterpillar has many sections across its body, so I knew that I could fit 84 colors along it.  Doing this project, I learned that painting 84 shades and tints takes a long time to execute because of having to add layers and layers of each color onto the canvas. Time management was a very important tool to have while painting The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

The materials I used to paint The Very Hungry Caterpillar were acrylic paints, consisting of primary, secondary, and tertiary colors I had to make. I created these colors with a pallet and a pallet knife to get the shades and tints just the right color. I also used paintbrushes, mainly smaller ones, and water to wash my paintbrush off whenever I had to switch colors.

My process of painting The Very Hungry Caterpillar took a few steps. The first thing I had to decide was what to paint and what size canvas I had to paint on, it had to include 84 shades and tints on it. I decided to paint a caterpillar because I knew that the insect has many sections to it, and painted it on a smaller, medium size canvas. After deciding my subject to make, my second step started with the foreground, where  I began to paint each fraction of the body slowly but surely, adding layers of the rainbow to make it look flat. After this, I painted the head and the floating, unattached feet of the caterpillar. Once I finished the foreground, I realized that I had used all 84 colors, so I picked out a light green and sky blue for the background. And my last finishing step was where ever I saw splotchy paintbrush strokes, I went over them to make sure each color looked flat and looked like a different color than the rest if I had the colors at hand.
