Nature #3

Snowy Slopes

Bark, paint, and gesso

6" x 24"

My inspiration for my 3rd sustained investigation came from the inquiry of how nature and art are connected. To make sure my art piece connected with my inquiry, I decided to use bark, so I went outside and found pieces to use. I decided to use paint and create a landscape of winter across the bark. I used a reference photo I had taken at Sugarloaf a few weeks before and used it for inspiration. Since my two other sustained investigations consisted of summer-ish scenes and other materials, I wanted to try out a different kind of material with a winter scene.

The materials I used for my last sustained investigation included, bark for the surface, and gesso, which I covered the bark with to create a good base layer to paint over, and paint. As well as a paint palette for mixing and a hammer to retrieve the bark from the outdoors.

My process for this project took a few steps. The first thing I had to do was choose what material to use. I used bark since it connects with nature and my inquiry is how nature or the outdoors connects to art. Once I did this, I had to get the bark, let it dry, and then paint it with gesso to fill the cracks and have a solid layer to paint with. I began to paint the bark starting with the blue sky, and completed it by adding trees and snow.
