Sgraffito Slab

Black Underglaze on Fired Clay

I got the inspiration to create this design on my sgraffito slab from the warmer weather outside arising and summer coming so soon, so I thought flowers would be a good idea. I also like flowers in general and draw them a lot so it was a fun process to create flowers on a surface completely new to me. I also thought it was a fun, fast project that wasn't too hard to create a sgraffito slab with half black and half white.

The materials I used when doing this project consisted of a white charcoal pencil on black construction paper for my design idea. For my Sgraffito slab, I used black underglaze on a piece of fired clay.

The process for creating my sgraffito slab didn't take a lot of time. The first step was to figure what to carve out of the clay, I chose to create a pattern of flowers and lines. After this, I started carving it out and made the flowers decorative with stripes of white and black and added more little flowers in between the bigger flowers to reach the goal of 50/50 black and white. After I did this, it went into the kiln to bake, and once it came out, I put a glaze on top of the slab of clay to create a shiny coat.
