Marker and pen ink on watercolor paper
1/14/22
I was trying to figure out how to successfully mix impressionist brush strokes, with surrealism's themes.
I started by measuring a border and started sketching right away with a pen. I knew that I wanted some of the brushstrokes, or 'marker strokes' to be short and choppy like those found in impressionism, so with the head, I made the marker strokes choppy, and I layered the colors. I then used a blue marker to create swirls around the head and filled in the space with pink. I used a fine point pen to create designs to make it so the picture was interesting and new to look at at all different angles.
I planned my project in one go because surrealism is all about connecting with the unconscious mind, so I put on some white noise in my AirPods, zoned out, and created something from as much of my subconscious mind as I could.
