Duality

For this project, we were tasked with creating a piece, or two pieces that were themed with duality in some way, shape, or form, and that interacted with one another.

To abide by the theme of duality I chose to do the sun and moon because of the duality between light and dark, and warmth and cool. I wanted to make jewelry trays because I think one of my previous projects was jewelry and I needed some place to put it. To have these two elements interact with each other I had the moon tray fit around the sun tray. Originally the sun tray had some sun rays radiating off of it but Sophie White knocked it out of my hands and they all broke off :( To make these trays I started with slabs that I rolled in the slab roller for the bases, and then cut out strips to build the walls/edges of them so that when Jewelry was placed on it wouldn't just slide off. After the bases were done and leather hard I used really wet clay to add the texture details such as the face on the sun and the craters on the moon.  I then used yellow underglaze on the sun because the best color yellow was in underglaze, after the bisque firing I clearly glazed the sun, and then used an off-white on the moon.

Overall I was pretty happy with this project besides the fact that my sun wasn't radiating. Had those rays not come off I think the piece would look much more balanced and appealing but that's okay! Something I would have done differently other than keep the rays was make sure that I really sanded down the spots where they were formerly attached for the smoothest most finished look possible.
