Eccentric Teapot

Claire Nadeau - Eccentric Teapot Design Template 23

For this assignment, we were tasked with creating a teapot, functioning or not, that represented something that we were inspired by. I was initially inspired by a sea urchin that I discovered washed up on the walks while on a wintry rock. I was struck by this sea urchin because of its vibrant green color and shape, and knew immediately when I heard of this project that that's what I wanted to base my teapot off of.

After finding inspiration, I made my slideshow about my plan for my teapot and began building. I used the pinch pot technique to make the body of my teapot. I made two pinchpots slipped and scored them together, smoothed it out very well, and shaped it. I then cut out my lid. I pulled my handle, shaped it, and then let it get a little dry before attaching it to my teapot so that it didn't get all deformed in the attaching process. I tried to make a spout many times using many techniques but ultimately I was at a loss. I ended up just coiling the spout as I was low on time. After making the spout the last thing I needed to build was the lid, which I did by just making a little pinchpot and adding on a little handle and some triangles to represent the sea urchin's teeth. After everything was built, it was time to texture. This was a neverending process of stippling the entire surface of my teapot dot by dot. I loved the way that it looked and was very happy with it, but the glaze didn't adhere to it very well which was incredibly disappointing. My handle also cracked because I wasn't being careful with it.

Overall, I am happy with my final product, but I just wish I had been more careful with my handle so it wasn't cracked I also wish the glaze would've adhered better but I'll know for next time.
