Artist Inspired

Claire Nadeau - Artist Inspired

The purpose of this project was to research an artist, learn about them, and then create a piece inspired by them. I chose Avi Amesbury because I really loved some of her pieces especially because the design elements were similar to mine, the carved black underglaze. I also liked how thin and smooth her works were and her technicality execelled where mine was lacking so it inspired me to be more careful and detailed when creating my own work.

To start this project, I wedged the clay, and started to make a pinch pot making sure that the clay was an even thickness all around. Once I was happy with the shape and thickness I began smoothing very carefully, this is the area that I struggled with in all of my past projects so I wanted this last one to be super smooth. After I was done smoothing I actually ended up dropping my soft and smooth pinch pot all the way to the floor which made one side very flat, I decided to roll with it and kept the shape as it was. Once it was smoothed I underglazed it and let it dry to leather hard. Once it was leather hard I carved only over the black underglaze until I had even black and white space all around the part that had underglaze. My pot was then bisque-fired, clear-glazed, and then glaze-fired.

Something I should've done better during this project was, not to drop it, but also to follow the design that I had planned for the carving, but completely forgot about. I think it would've looked really cool and I wish I had remembered to do it, but regardless I am still happy with my final product.
