So you've done the boring leg work of taking the time to read this guide to getting started in the world of TWISRPG (Bravo!) now you actually want to get down to the process of making your own character! Well, let's take what we've learned and break it down into a step-by-step process. Don't worry, everything will be covered here and (hopefully) we can get you started on your way in the game. Let's get going, shall we?
Step One: Choose your race, starting job, and name your character
You're ready to set out on your first big adventure into the world! There's only one problem... you haven't created your character yet. Lucky for you, our friend Owain here is also in the process of creating his first character, so why don't we tag along with him while he makes his character and see how it's done? The first thing Owain is going to is look at his character sheet template and sees this:
Owain's character is very basic at the moment, but the sheet itself, is not. All that is required for Owain is to choose a name, race and primary job class and the sheet will update is character automatically! Owain decides his character will be a Bangaa Warrior named Owain Kendricks. He changes the sections for his name, race and job class (all job classes have abbreviations that must be used for the character sheet template to function properly). After those changes, his character sheet looks like this:
Looking good so far! All of Owain's stats and starting numbers have been automatically updated base on his choices of job and race! Next Mr. Kendricks needs to pick his Traits and Skills.
Step Two: Choosing Skills and Traits for your character (Needs updated later)
Owain needs to choose what his starting traits and invest in some skills. So we move to the skills section of the character sheet and find this:
Pretty scary looking, right? Lots of numbers and stuff... but don't worry, it's not that bad! Taking a look back at the skills page , Owain realizes these skills will mostly be used out of combat, but he might be able to use them in combat as well. He also knows that at character creation he has 100 skill points to work with (100 is the starting number, character gain 10 more skill points per level) and that the max skill (special) rank at level 1 is 30. But before he goes any farther in this process, he needs to see what kind of skills he gets bonuses and penalties from being a Bangaa Warrior. The columns which read Job and Race show bonuses and penalties for each respectively. Optimizing the bonuses and penalties is key to creating a balanced character or a character that can be very specialized. Owain notices that he gets quite the bonuses in the physical section, so he starts there.
Owain wants a strong character that doesn't tire quickly from physical exertion. So he starts by adding 10 points into Athletics, Stamina and Strength. Owain knows a lot of a TWIS campaign is role playing, so he wants a character that can interact well with other players and NPCs. He jumps to the Social sections and decides 20 points into Intimidation and 20 points in Intuition will serve him well. With 70 points spent, Owain looks over all the skill and realizes he wants a character that knows how to craft armor! He adds 20 points in crafting and decides he wants be even stronger, adding another 10 points into Strength. In the end, Owain Kendricks is looking good:
Owain likes his skill distribution, so he moves on to the Dossier tab to pick some starting traits. This is what he sees:
Step Three: Choosing Abilities
Everything is all done and ready to go with Owain's skills and traits. Now Owain needs to decide what abilities he will be taking with him to start his adventure! He heads over to the Red Mage page and decides that he's going to take Red Magic I, which gives him two spells. Looking at the Red Magic spell page, Owain decides to take Cure and Stone as his two spells that he can learn. After that, Owain takes Focus Strike, Spark Strike, and Enelemental, giving him the 4 abilities that are available to Owain at character creation. Owain heads to the "Abilities" section of his character sheet and places the skills in the respective places on the character sheet:
Pretty simple stuff. He marks down what his ability choices were, what costs they have (if any) and leaves himself a small note to what the abilities do for easy access. He's done here for the time being, it's time to move on to getting some equipment for his character!
Step Four: Buying Equipment and Items (may need changing)
It's almost time for Owain to start his adventure! We're not quite done with character creation yet, however, and now it's time to get Owain some gear! So he heads over to his friendly shopkeeper who has all the goods readily available to the character at character creation. Owain checks his character sheet against the traits he has chosen, and thanks to Imperial Lowborn (500 gil) plus Disciple of Trade (250 gil bonus), Owain has 750 gil available to use at this current time! Handy! Owain's shopping list includes:
This leaves Owain with (750 - [180+100+90+110]) = 270 gil. Plenty left over! He also decides to grab himself some Tonics and Tinctures, in the event that he doesn't have enough MP to cast Cure (yikes!). He grabs 3 Tonics at the cost 150 gil, and a Tincture for another 100. This leaves Owain with 20 gil. Not a bad shopping spree! He heads over to his character creation screen and place his purchases in the respective places on the character sheet, and calculate up any bonuses he may have gained from his equipment! The Onion Shield grants him +2 Defense, Magic Defense, and Evasion. The Onion Jacket gives him +20 HP, and his Green Cap gives him +5 HP and +2 Magic Defense, as well as a small resistance to Earth elemental attacks! He places his items in the correct slots in his character sheet, places the items in his inventory, and calculates his remaining gil. His sheet, outside of the base changes made to other stats, which will be reflected as needed, looks like this:
The page lists all of his items in their respective equipment slots (the three extra "Barehand" slots are in the event that Owain has any other weapons he might want to use), and also reflect what kind of stat bonuses he is gaining from them! His inventory page is also complete, showing that he has all the items he bought ready for battle. The "Job Bonus" listed on the inventory page allows him to carry up to 5 items into battle with him (PA+1 bonus) without having to rummage around in his pack trying to find any other items he might be carrying. Just a little further now and we'll be all done!
Step Five: Taking your first step on the Zodiac Board
Being a character that has just started out, Owain needs to take a step on the Zodiac Board of his choosing! Being a Red Mage, Owain decides that he wants to be able to do a little bit of everything, while maintaining some decent speed, so he looks at the Zodiac Board and decides that, as far as spreading out his stats go, Sagittarius seems to be the place that he should start from on the board. It starts with either a Speed (SP) or Magic Attack (MA) step, but from there it opens up pretty far for Owain to build his character as he chooses. He starts by taking the first step on the MA spot on the board. Owain goes into his Zodiac Board and places an X on the board where the "MA" used to be on the blue spot, and his character sheet automatically updates for him! How useful!
Step Six: Finishing touches
Almost done! Just a few more things for Owain to checkup on before he goes out on his first adventure, hopefully with some like minded individuals who have made characters that will compliment what Owain has set up for himself. One last checklist of things to do before we're all done:
If you want to see what the character sheet should look like after character creation, go here and look at the one that Owain just made for himself! It won't be fully complete (It'll be missing text about his character and such), but everything else there will be complete!
