Basics
Crafting follows the following process:
Crafting the Initial Item
Once the equipment that is decided to be crafted is selected, materials must be spent. The tier of the resulting equipment is determined by the LOWEST tier of all material used.
Forge Item
Crafting
Description: The crafter creates the base item.
Effect: Make a Crafting check.
Determining Base Stats
Equipment forged may have slightly different properties than what is purchased in a store. When equipment is made, roll the base statistics for the item. Certain Talents may modify this roll.
Weaponry
In addition, if you are creating a Grimoire or Katana, an additional roll will be made to determine the added ability. Skip this step if you are not crafting a Grimoire or Katana.
Crafting Actions
Once the equipment that is decided to be crafted is selected
Temper Equipment
Crafting - Costs 1 Durability
Description: The smith pulls latent aetherial energies from the catalyst and forges it into the item.
Effect: Most basic catalysts don't require a Temper roll. For special ones, make a Crafting check vs. the Complexity of the catalyst. On a success, the catalyst is installed and its effects take place.
Treat Equipment
Crafting
Description: The crafter fine tunes parts of the item to make it easier to craft with.
Effect: Make a Crafting check, and subtract 20 for each time Treat Equipment has already been used.
Varnish Item
Crafting - Costs 1 Durability
Description: The crafter locks in the current elemental configuration to unlock an ability on the equipment.
Effect: Make a Crafting check, and subtract 50 for each ability already locked (including those from materia).
If the current elemental levels meet the criteria for the selected ability, the varnish is used and the item gains the ability.
Install Materia
Crafting - Costs Durability dependent on materia used
Description: The crafter utilizes condensed magick to install an ability into the equipment.
Effect: Make a Crafting check, and subtract 50 for each ability already locked (including those from varnishes). Then, consult the chart below.
Disassembly and Distillation
Equipment can be disassembled to recover materials or catalysts, or distilled into materia to transfer an ability to another item. Each disassembly ability destroys the equipment it is used on.
Recover Materials
Disassembly
Description: The crafter destroys equipment to return materials of the same tier.
Effect: Make a Crafting check, and subtract 20 for each Tier past 1. Then, consult the chart below.
100 or higher
75-99
74 or less
Regain half the materials used for the item (rounded down).
Regain one of each material used to make the item.
The item is lost and no materials are gained.
Recover Magicite
Disassembly
Description: The crafter destroys equipment to return catalysts dependent on the abilities on the item.
Effect: Make a Crafting check, and subtract 20 for each Tier past 1. Then, consult the chart below.
100 or higher
75-99
74 or less
Regain three magicite, of any type used to gain one of the abilities on the item.
Regain one magicite, of any type used to gain one of the abilities on the item.
The item is lost and no magicite is gained.
Distill Materia
Disassembly
Description: The crafter distills equipment into a form of concentrated aether called materia, which can be used in further crafting.
Effect: Make a Crafting check, and subtract 20 for each Tier past 1. Then, consult the chart below.
Special: Certain abilities may have higher difficulty. In addition, certain abilities, particularly unique abilities, cannot be distilled into materia.
100 or higher
75-99
74 or lower
The ability is successfully distilled and the smith may immediately make a Recover Materials or Recover Catalyst check.
The ability is successfully distilled.
The ability is not successfully distilled.
Final Notes
Crafting is an excellent way to customize your gear, but bear in mind a few things.
Elemental Gear
A weapon may only have one Elementstrike ability on it at a time. Similarly, a piece of armor may only have one Resist: Element, Immune: Element, Absorb: Element or Reflect: Element ability on it at a time.
In addition, Grimoires have their bonus spell changed to one of the appropriate element (Blizzard for Ice, Aero for Wind, Dia for Light, et cetera) if they have an Elementstrike ability on them.
Unique Abilities
There are many unique items, weapons and armor throughout the world that cannot be replicated via crafting. Some of these abilities will be able to be distilled into materia, while others will not.
Acquiring Materials
Materials can be harvested from locations throughout the world, or even extracted from fallen beasts using Wilderness checks. Materials can be obtained through missions or hunts--a group may wish to venture to mines in order to haul out some metal, or to an enchanted forest to find strong lumber. However, monsters and adventure abounds in all places...
Acquiring Catalysts
Similar to acquiring materials, catalysts can be found throughout the world, extracted from monsters, or synthesized through Alchemy. Quite often, it takes a combination of both.
