Abilities are a part of jobs, and come in three different flavors: Job Action Abilities (A-Abilities), Reflex Abilities (R-Abilities), and Support Abilities (S-Abilities).
A-Abilities are abilities to be used in combat situations, when fighting monsters or whatever might come your character's way. They can range from attacks to helpful skills, but are always active... Nothing passive is included in this category whatsoever.
R-Abilities are abilities that are automatically used when a certain condition is met. You start with 1 R-Ability slot and gain a 2nd at level 40. Catch from the Thief job, for instance, allows your character to potentially catch and then keep ammunition that is fired their way... Provided they successfully dodge the incoming projectile. Every R-Ability relies on a condition being met before it activates, and they usually respond to incoming attacks or status effects.
S-Abilities are abilities that are almost always active and offer passive benefits this way. You start with 1 S-Ability slot and gain a 2nd at level 11. The bonuses from an S-Ability can range from helpful combat abilities, such as the ability to throw potions up to 3 squares away, to abilities that allow utility, such as a free roll behind-the-scenes to notice any secret passageways that you might encounter and would otherwise skip over.
This is where things get slightly complicated. Should your character desire to, they may mix and match jobs -- However, they are limited by JP, or Job Points. Your character gains Job Points as they level--these Job Points limit how far they can take abilities out of different jobs. A starting character has two JP, and thus can select abilities from two different Jobs. Consider all of these carefully when choosing your character's starting skillset!
Abilities have Ranks, as well, that are gated by your character's level. A character of any level can learn Rank 1 Abilities from any job, but they will have to reach level 7 with that job before they can start learning Rank 2 Abillities. Consider this when choosing your character's starting abilities.
A character is able to learn four Rank 1 abilities during its creation, from any job or mixture of jobs that they'd like. Bear in mind that it's disadvantageous to learn abilities from too many different jobs! Please refer to the Job Overview page to get a better look at each job's role as well as the A-Abilities that it can make use of.
