Back to Way Back Yonder
Life outside the garden was harsh and demanding. Adam worked as hard as he could and still was only able to provide the bare necessities of life. God had cursed the ground, and it produced very little despite his best efforts. It was frustrating work and no matter how tired he was at the end of the day he had to get up the next morning and start all over. His and Eve’s lives depended on it. Not only were his daily tasks tough, but no matter how hard he tried, he seemed to never please Eve. If he disagreed with her, she would nag him until he gave in, and she got what she wanted. And then, there were times of the month when she was impossible to live with. He still loved her, but it was far from being paradise.
As for Eve, she was busy helping the best she could. Adam would now give her orders as to what needed to be done, and she would obey him until she could stand his condescending attitude no more. Then she would lash back at him, and they would wind up not speaking to each other for several days. Her life was far from being easy and there was not a day she didn’t think about how good life had been in the garden. She did feel a deep sadness when she reflected on what had been lost. And, on top of all this, Adam was no comfort to her. In her opinion he was borderline lazy and when he did do something she had to go behind him to make sure it was done right. Most of the time it wasn’t, and she had to fix it. She still loved him, but it was far from being paradise.
Some time passed since their expulsion and one day Adam was out in the field trying to harvest something for dinner. Eve was busy washing clothes before getting ready to prepare whatever her husband could find for the evening meal. On a nearby rock sat the angel Samyaza. He was closely watching her every move. Every once in a while, he would lean back and give a long sigh as he pined over the earthly creature.
Lucifer saw him on the rock and came over to speak to him. “Howdy, Sam.” He returned the greeting without taking his eyes off of Eve. Lucifer looked hard at him and then glanced at the woman. “Don’t you get ever tired of watching her? The last time we talked you were sitting here on this rock lusting after that woman.” Without looking up Samyaza replied, “It wasn’t this rock.”
Lucifer scratched his chin and then it dawned on him what he meant. “Oh, yeah, you’re right. That was back before they were thrown out of the garden.”
“That was back before you got them thrown out,” Samyaza declared with a hint of agitation.
Lucifer detected such and in defense asserted, “Well, it’s not my fault. They shouldn’t have listened to me.”
“You’ve upset a lot of people, especially the Lord,” Samyaza remarked.
“Not to mention Michael,” Lucifer agreed. “Whoa! Does he have a temper?”
Returning his thoughts back to the woman, Samyaza gave another long sigh and said with a whimper, “Even out here she’s still beautiful.” Lucifer started to laugh and then thought better of it. There was no need to upset the angel as he might need him as an ally one day. Besides, he was one of the few still willing to speak to him. So, he cocked his head and took another look at the woman. He offered, “Well, maybe, in a rugged and dirty type of way.”
Those were fighting words to Samyaza, and he bristled, “Don’t you talk bad about her!”
Lucifer, surprised at how sensitive he was toward the woman, quickly said, “Hey, slow down, Sam! I didn’t mean anything. It’s just she is what she is. After all, you have to admit, she did look better when she was in the garden. She seemed to take better care of herself.”
Still being defensive Samyaza shot back, “Well, she’s not there anymore thanks to you.”
“I hate you feel that way. I was just trying to help the situation, that’s all,” Lucifer alleged as he smarted from Samyaza’s sharp tone.
Realizing he had spoken harsher than he meant, Samyaza turned to Lucifer and offered, “I’m not mad at you, Luce. In fact, in some ways I admire you.” This was more to Lucifer’s liking, and he asked, “Really?”
Samyaza smiled and said, “Yeah. It’s not everybody who can challenge the Lord and live to tell about it. You’re the first to try and you were successful, too.” This was music to Lucifer’s ears and he shook a little with pride when he responded, “Well, if you put it that way.”
“And I’ll tell you something else,” Samyaza continued. “I’m not the only one who feels that way.”
Lucifer could hardly believe what he was hearing. “They’re others who feel the same?”
Looking around to make sure no one was listening, Samyaza replied in a low voice, “Quite a few. Everybody’s keeping it low key for now but if you ever want to lead them against Him, they’re ready to join you.”
This revelation was far more than Lucifer had ever dreamed. He knew he had rebelled against God, but he wasn’t sure what effect it had on other angels. With so many of them not even willing to speak to him he had figured it was him against everybody else. Now there was a chance, possibly a very good chance, he could count on other’s support, and this could make for endless possibilities. Why, he could now even dare to think, that he could lead an outright rebellion against the Lord and have a very good chance of coming out on the winning side. But he needed to take it slow. He had to make sure the time was right, and everything was in place to ensure victory. “That’s very interesting,” he observed. “But you’re right; this is not quite the time. Michael and his bunch are just itching for a fight.”
“Well, I’ve been thinking,” Samyaza revealed. “You give me the word and I’ll gather the others together.”
Lucifer laughed at this and said, “Well, I must admit, Sam, I’m impressed.”
“That I would join you against God?”
“Yeah, that too, but I’m really impressed that you’ve been able to think about something besides that woman, Eve,”
Lucifer snickered as Samyaza quickly turned his attention back toward the woman. He gave a small whimper and asked, “She is beautiful, isn’t she?”
Lucifer took another look at her. If Samyaza liked her and she could be a means in him attaining his goal of defeating God, then who was he to argue? In fact, she was looking a whole lot better to him so he replied, “Well, the more I think about it, she might have possibilities.”

Samyaza glanced at Lucifer and said, “Thanks for the support. It means a lot to me.”
“It’s the least I could do,” Lucifer laughed and then he noticed something about Eve he had missed before. Smiling he pointed to her and suggested, “Besides, take a look at her.”
“That’s what I’ve been doing all this time,” Samyaza smirked.
Lucifer ignored the sarcasm and repeated, “No, I mean take a real close look at her.”
Samyaza took another look and studied her up one side and then down the other. His mouth fell open with surprise. “Well, I’ll be. I didn’t see that before.”
“That’s because you were blinded by her beauty,” Lucifer coughed. With amazement and wonderment Samyaza declared, “She’s got one of them in her womb!”
“Yep, she’s pregnant,” Lucifer agreed.
After studying her a little more Samyaza observed, “They don’t know it yet, do they?”
Lucifer shrugged and answered, “I guess not. I guess the Lord’s still working in His mysterious ways or something.”
“I suppose He hasn’t given up on the humans, yet,” Samyaza said as he started to think about the potential of more humans on the earth.
“I guess not,” Lucifer smirked. “I thought I’d shown Him what a mistake they were, but it appears He’s going to try to keep them going. It’s hard to figure.”
Suddenly, Samyaza got excited as it dawned on him what more humans could mean for him. He exclaimed, “You know what this means, Luce? You were right. There’s going to be more like her and I’m going to get me one.”
Off in the distance Adam was making his way home from the fields carrying a few ears of corn. Lucifer saw him coming and declared, “Yeah, that’s nice. Well, here comes Adam. If you’ll excuse me I don’t think I have the stomach to put up with him today.”
Samyaza raised his wings and announced, “I’m going, too. I want to tell some of the others about what’s happening here. I think they’ll find it very interesting.” With that he flew off into the heavens as Lucifer walked back to his hole. Grinning, and with a lot to think about, he jumped in and disappeared.
Eve didn’t bother to look up when Adam approached and laid a few small ears of corn beside her. “Is that all you got?” she smirked. He turned away and replied, “That’s it.”
“How am I supposed to make a decent meal with just that?!?” she exclaimed.
Biting his lip and trying to control his temper he shot back, “Well, if you think you can do any better you’re sure welcome to try.”
Trying to control her own frustration she responded, “I know how you are. I just don’t want any complaints when you’re still hungry.”
“Well, I can’t perform miracles and make food appear out of thin air,” he retaliated as his voice started to rise with irritation.
“Yeah, that’s what we need; a miracle,” she smirked as she started shucking the corn.
Adam gritted his teeth and uttered, “You actually cooking anything would be a miracle in itself.”
“What do you mean by that wisecrack?”
He knew he had pushed her buttons, and it felt good as he was itching for an argument. “You know what I mean. It seems the only thing you can really cook is raw vegetables.”
“Well, you’re welcome to cook for yourself,” she angrily retorted as she turned back to washing clothes.
“And you’re welcome to go out and gather your own food,” he shot back.
As she fought back tears she sneered, “Oh, sure, that’s what you’d like for me to do. Then you wouldn’t be bothered having to care for me.”
He thought here we go again. “I didn’t say it was a bother. Don’t go putting words in my mouth.”
“You didn’t have to say it. You thought it so it must be true,” she pouted.
Throwing his hands up in annoyance, he asked, “Oh, why do I even try?” Then he bitterly said, “You weren’t this way when we lived in the garden.”
“And you were different, too,” she refuted. “Back then I never knew you had a temper. But, boy, look at you now!”
“Well, for your information, I didn’t have one until I met you,” he started to yell. “You bring the worst out in people.”
She yelled back, “Well, there must be a whole lot of bad in you ‘cause it keeps on coming out.”
If she wanted a fight, then he was more than willing to oblige. “You’re a good one to talk. Thanks to you we’re in this fine mess anyways.”
“Oh, yeah, blame me.”
He moved closer and shouted, “You are to blame!”
“I am not!”
“I believe it was you who listened to the snake,” he exclaimed. “Only you would be so naïve to believe a reptile.”
She glared at her husband. He was impossible. “You didn’t put up much of a fight when I gave you some of the forbidden fruit,” she continued yelling. “A good husband would have stopped me.”
“That’s because I trusted you. And look what happened,” he shouted just as loud.
“Oh, so it’s all my fault, is it?” she asserted as she put her hands on her hips in anger while clutching a wet piece of clothing.
“If you say so…”
“God didn’t see it that way,” she yelled. “He didn’t curse us until you ate from it.”
Grabbing some of the corn and walking away he shouted back, “Yeah, you’re right. Why did I eat of it? Why did I listen to you? I should’ve been stronger and let Him throw you out here. Then I could still be in there enjoying paradise instead of out here stuck with you!”
She burst out crying and threw the wet clothing at him. “I hate you!!”
He caught the clothing and flung it back at her. “Tell me something new!”
Adam flopped to the ground with his back to Eve and started shucking the rest of the corn. She turned her back to him and continued washing their clothes. He looked toward the heavens and sadly shook his head. She looked toward the heavens and wiped her tears.

Gathering her into his arms, Adam smiled at his wife and started to kiss her when she suddenly bent over gagging. She pushed him away and ran off to vomit beside a tree. He was dumbfounded at this turn of events and yelled after her, “Are you okay?”
Immediately, the angel Gabriel appeared standing beside him. “She’ll be fine. In fact, everything is according to God’s will,” he declared.
“What do you mean?” a bewildered Adam asked.
Seeing the angel, Eve came back to join her husband and said, “I’m sorry for that. I don’t know what came over me.”
The angel Gabriel smiled and declared, “It is because you are pregnant.” They both were astounded and exclaimed together, “Pregnant?!?”
Gabriel reaffirmed that they were and then offered, “The Lord has blessed you with a child. It’s all part of His plan for your seed to continue so you can fill the earth and subdue it.”
Adam excitedly hugged his wife and shouted, “A child. We’re going to have a baby!!”
“I’m the one who’s going to have the baby!” Eve corrected him as she remembered God’s curse upon her that childbirth was going to be painful. Even so, she was excited at the news, too. Adam laughed and hugged her again. “You know what I mean. I’ll be there with you every step of the way.”
Gabriel smiled at the couple and remarked, “It is the Lord’s will for this child to be born. He will be the first of many.”
Eve was quick to catch the gender of the pronoun and asked, “He?”
The angel nodded and replied, “Yes, it will be a son.”
Adam pumped his fist in the air in jubilation at the thought of bearing a son. Eve put both hands to her mouth and shrilled with delight at the prospect. After thinking for a moment she declared, “I want to name him ‘Cain’, for I will have produced a man with God’s help.”
“Well, I helped, too,” laughed Adam as his chest started to poke out in pride at what had been accomplished. Gabriel leaned over and whispered to him, “I thought you were the one who was naming everything.”
“I heard that!” Eve said as she sternly put her hands on her waist.
Adam gathered her into his arms again, kissed her and tenderly said, “Yes, dear. Whatever you want.” Then he pumped his fist again and shouted, “We’re going to have a little man!!”
The loving couple embraced again and the angel, seeing his work was done, took flight and disappeared. Though sin had entered the world it was God’s will that humans fill the Earth with their kind. There were many more hardships to come but the angels rejoiced as they delighted in the fulfillment of God’s purpose. Some rejoiced more than others and one ex-angel was not rejoicing at all. He was busy plotting his next move.
