Back to Creation of Man
Back to Way Back Yonder
Uriel and Adam spent the better part of two weeks exploring the rest of the garden. At each turn Adam was thankful of what had been given him and worshiped the God of the heavens. Uriel was impressed with this new creature called man. It was not long before he came to the conclusion that this was God’s crowning achievement for the planet called Earth. He too was moved with gratitude and newfound appreciation of the Lord Almighty.
Once they had finished exploring and found themselves back at the oak tree where Adam was created, Uriel bid him farewell and returned to the spiritual world. Adam stood observing the leaning tree and tried to remember if it had always been that way. His thoughts were interrupted by the appearance of Gabriel. “Hello, Adam.”
Adam returned the greeting and then Gabriel said, “My name is Gabriel. I am one of God’s messengers.”
“Oh, you’re an angel like Uriel,” Adam surmised.
“That’s right,” Gabriel agreed. “There are thousands upon thousands of us. I have come to you with a message from the Lord.”
Adam was quick to respond, “What is my Father’s bidding?”
“He has important work for you. You are to have in subjection all the living creatures of this earth,” the angel pronounced.
Adam nodded his head and responded, “This He has told me.”
Gabriel continued, “It is to start with you naming all the creatures, big and small.”
After thinking it over for a moment Adam exclaimed, “Wow! That’s a lot of work. How will I ever be able to do this?”
Gabriel smiled and replied, “We will help. We’ll bring the animals to you. This will give you a chance to observe them and then select a suitable name for each one.” Adam returned the smile and said, “Okay, then let’s get started.”
And thus, the angels worked tirelessly in bringing all sorts of animals to Adam so he could give them a name. They would stop when he needed to rest and would start back as soon as he was ready to continue. No matter how small or how big, it was his job to give them a suitable name. He was diligent at it as he knew he was doing the Lord’s work.
One day the angel Samyaza brought two creatures walking on two legs and clucking loudly. He approached Adam and said, “Here are two of them. Male and female.”
Adam looked long and hard at them and then walked around to get another view. Finally, he observed, “They look like birds. Are they able to fly?”
“No, they can’t,” Samyaza replied. “They just walk around clucking and eating and pooping. They do lay a lot of eggs, though.”
Adam rubbed his chin and then declared, “Let’s call them ‘chicken.’”
The angel yawned out of boredom and then said, “Chicken it is. But, between you and me, I don’t think they’ll ever be worth much. I mean, look at them. Who could ever like chickens?”
Adam burst out laughing and replied, “Well, time will tell. Thank you Samyaza.”
The angel bade him farewell and led the chickens off as he started another search for any creature that had not been given a name. As soon as he left Lucifer came leading two four legged animals with horns and hairy goatees. He walked up to Adam and said, “All right, here they are.”
“Hmmm…What do we have here?” he asked.
Lucifer looked off into the distance with disinterest and replied, “I don’t know what they are, but they smell funny.”
Adam looked hard at Lucifer and then at the animals. “Maybe so, but they’re still part of God’s wonderful creation.”
Stifling a yawn Lucifer mumbled, “Yeah? Whatever. So, what you’re going name them, ‘old smelly-wooly-four-legged-beast who will eat anything’?”
A frown came on the man’s face as he felt stung at Lucifer’s flippant attitude. “No, I’m not. Give me a moment and I’ll think of something better.”
Lucifer could tell Adam was becoming irritated at him. It was happening more and more whenever he was around his fellow angels, too. He decided if that was the way they wanted to be then so be it. Everyone was so giddy over God’s wonderful creation, and no one seemed to care that a great injustice had been done against him. He reckoned God had his reasons but that didn’t make it fair. If his attitude was bitter and no one wanted to show sympathy for him then he didn’t care. He didn’t need any of them. But, looking at Adam study the two smelly creatures it dawned on him that there might be a chance to redeem himself in the eyes of the Lord and his fellow angels. He quickly formulated his plan and for the first time since Adam’s creation he was starting to feel good inside. If he played it just right, then he would be exalted, and everyone would marvel at his intuitiveness and illustrious manner.
Looking Adam directly in the face, he smiled and said, “Yeah, take your time. Look, I don’t want to be nosy, but don’t you get tired of doing this all the time? I mean it’s a lot of work.”
Without looking up from the animals Adam replied, “No, I rather enjoy it. Besides, it’s the Lord’s work. Do you get tired of bringing them to me?”
Lucifer shrugged and answered, “No, not really. Sometimes I have to go out of my way to find a male and a female. The last time I wasn’t watching what I was doing and tried to bring two male hamsters.”
Adam laughed, “They don’t get along too good.”
Lucifer laughed, too. “Tell me about it. One of them tried to bite the other one and then both of them tried to bite me. By the way, why did you name them ‘hamsters?’ They look like rats to me.”
Rubbing his chin as he continued to study the two animals Lucifer brought, he asserted, “No, they’re different from rats. I’m trying to be as specific as I can.”
Lucifer could tell Adam was no longer irritated at him so he decided to put his plan into action. “You know something else I noticed?”
“What’s that?”
“We keep bringing two of a kind to you,” he stated. “Male and female. But, I can’t help but notice there’s only one of you.” Adam thought for a moment and then agreed, “That’s true, I’m the only one.”
“Why do you think that is?” Lucifer asked. Adam gave it some more thought and then replied, “I don’t know. He hasn’t revealed His purpose yet, at least, not to me.”
Lucifer nodded his head and added, “Yeah, He’s that way sometimes…well, most of the time. But, you know, it really makes you look odd. Not that anybody’s talking about you or anything. It’s just, don’t you get lonely?”
Adam shrugged and replied, “Well, I haven’t really thought about it. I’ve been pretty busy.”
Lucifer patted him on the back and said, “All I’m saying is everything else on this earth has two of them but you. If I was you I’d want more.” He could tell he had Adam thinking about what he wanted him to think about. “Angel, I’ve never thought about it like that.”
With the most pitiful look on his face Lucifer continued, “Well, it’s something to think about. I mean this animal has this other animal. Some of them even sleep together. But, poor old Adam, he’s all alone. It doesn’t seem right, at least, not to me.”
Adam knew Lucifer was on to something. Why hadn’t he thought of it before? Yes, he had noticed how there were at least two of every kind but none who looked like him. It was true the angels resembled him when they materialized but he’d already found out this was not their natural state. With determination he stated, “Lucifer, you make a good point. I’m going to talk to the Lord about it.”
Lucifer smiled as Adam had responded just the way he hoped he would. “Yeah, He’ll probably listen to you. So, anyway, what are you going to call these animals?”
“How about ‘goat’?”
“‘Goat’? Okay, if that’s what you want,” Lucifer said as he started leading the animals away. “But, hey, think about that lonely thing. I’m sure you’ll see I’m right.”
“I will. And thanks, angel.”
Adam stood for a while as he mulled over his conversation with Lucifer. He was lonely and it wasn’t a good feeling. He trusted his Father; after all, He had given everything to him with the exception of the tree of good and evil. So, why wouldn’t He give him a companion?
His thoughts were interrupted as Gabriel approached with two more creatures that would eventually be call “dogs.”
“Here are two more,” the angel declared.
“Oh, hello Gabriel,” Adam said. “Thanks, but uh, could we pick up here tomorrow? I’ve got some other things I want to think about.”
“Sure. I’ll see you tomorrow,” he replied. Gabriel had already learned that humans were a frail species when compared with many of God’s creations. He knew to not push too hard as Adam was special to the Lord. Anyway, it didn’t matter; there was no need to be in a hurry as there had been no time limit placed on naming all the animals. Another day wouldn’t matter.
After Gabriel left, Adam noticed a group of chimps swinging on the limbs of a nearby tree. There was more than one of them. They, too, had males and females. He approached them and held his arms out as if asking for their help. “That angel’s right. I am alone,” he sighed. “Why hadn’t I noticed it before? I don’t like it. I need someone, too.”
All around him angels detected he was not happy. Though not revealing themselves to him, they gathered around him in an effort to bestow pleasant thoughts toward him. It wasn’t working as he gathered a baby chimp in his arms and sighed deeply.

Adam gave the baby chimp back to its mother and turned to walk away when he noticed all the animals had stopped and were looking toward the heavens. He couldn’t see them, but the angels were looking, too. All were anticipating the voice of the Lord.
“It is not good for man to continue by himself,” the deep mellow and tender voice spoke. “I’m going to make a helper for him. A true compliment of him.”
The angels started rejoicing. Adam started shouting and even the chimpanzees got excited. All were thrilled at the loving mercy of the Lord Almighty. Off in the distance Lucifer was excited, too. His plan was working. He couldn’t help himself and exclaimed, “Yes, yes, yes. A helper. That’s exactly what he needs.”
Adam ran back and picked up the baby chimp. He started dancing around with him and the others joined in. It wasn’t long before he started feeling tired. So, he gave the baby back to its mother once again and said, “If you guys will excuse me, I think I’ll take a nap. It’s been a long day.” He walked over to the leaning oak tree, yawned, and then curled up under its shade. It was not long before he was fast asleep.
Lucifer, seeing the sleeping Adam, came over and gently pushed the oak tree back to an upright position. After admiring his handiwork he thought out loud, “This is my chance. Once again I can offer my services. How can the Lord refuse me this time? All is needed is just a tiny piece of me and then God can take it and form the most beautiful and intelligent creature ever known. It will be a splendid helper for him. He’ll be totally happy and all praise will go to the Lord. Of course, all the angels will thank me for my generosity. Some may even admire me. Hmm…I’d better do this right.”
Bending on one knee he bowed his head in worshipful prayer to the Almighty.
“Father, I’ve always been faithful and true,
And now I bow and pray to you.
Please show me you really care,
And allow me a chance to share.
Amen.”
He had barely stood up when Michael the archangel came flying as fast as lightning and landed beside him. Lucifer didn’t like archangels. He thought they were nasty and he thought Michael was the nastiest of them all. They stood at least two feet taller than the tallest angel and their massive arm and leg muscles gave them the strength of twenty angels. Instead of speaking they always seemed to be growling. Their wings were bigger and they had no sense of humor. For them it was all about carrying out the will of the Lord. Nothing else mattered to them. He’d tried to joke with a couple of them one time but they just stood there staring at him. Finally, they just flew off and zipped out of sight leaving him to wonder why God would waste His time creating such creatures.
To be in the presence of Michael was somewhat intimidating. Of all the archangels he chose to carry a sword attached to his side and he had been known to use it on occasion. Lucifer saw firsthand what he could do with it. He saw him become angry at a planet and take his sword and in one swipe cut it in two. The force of his blow not only split the planet but the resulting explosion ripped it into tiny chunks of rock. They’re not too far from earth as they orbit the sun near the giant gas planets toward the outer rim of the solar system.
Lucifer knew if the archangels were not kept in check by the Lord, they could easily wreak havoc everywhere. No one would be able to stand against them. But there was no fear of them running amok as their fierce loyalty to God was unquestioned. It was their nature to serve Him, and they tolerated nothing else.
“Lucifer, the Lord has sent me to you,” Michael growled. Lucifer, recovering from his surprise at how fast an answer had come from the Lord, bowed and said, “I humbly give myself in service to Him.”
There was no emotion on Michael’s face and even less in his voice, if that’s possible, as he declared, “Well, He appreciates your gesture, as do all of us, but He has something else in mind.”
Lucifer straightened and wanted to scream “What!?!” at this latest rejection. How could the Lord turn him down again? This was not right. It was not fair. He had done everything right and still it wasn’t good enough. It was almost too much but he fought to control his emotions and coldly said, “I see.”
Michael was undeterred. He growled, “He wants the new creature to come directly from the man, Adam.”
Lucifer couldn’t believe what he was hearing. The new creature would come from the man!?! That made no sense at all to him. “But he’s just a pile of dirt! There’s not much you can do with that!”
Without flinching Michael declared, “Don’t sell the Lord short. He will do what is in the best interest of everyone concerned.”
Lucifer wanted to run and scream and smash the oak tree to the ground. Instead he sneered, “Well, it seems He’s not too interested in what’s best for me.”
This time Michael did raise an eyebrow as he bellowed, “What’s best for you?!? Lucifer, this is not about you.”
“Well, it should be!”
Resting his hand on the handle of his sword Michael simply responded, “I see.”
Lucifer had all he could take. He didn’t care how big and powerful the archangel was. Injustice had been done and he wasn’t going to be silent about it anymore. “Do you really, Michael?” he asked in a derisive voice.
Michael’s fingers played with the handle of his sword as he barked, “I see more than you may realize. I see an angel who is an egotistical idiot. I see one who is self-absorbed and more interested in making a name for himself than in serving the Lord.”
Lucifer gave a sarcastic laugh and retorted, “Oh, now you’re going to get nasty about it.”
At this, Michael stepped forward to where he and Lucifer were almost touching. Looking down at the angel whose nose was almost against his chest he growled, “Nasty? I’m not being nasty. You don’t want me to get nasty. You wouldn’t like the results.”
“Is that a threat?”
“If it needs to be.”
Without taking his eyes off of the archangel’s stone hard face Lucifer took two steps back and announced, “Then, I think we’re through here.”
Michael raised his wings in preparation for flight and bellowed, “You’d better make sure we are through here, Lucifer. Cause if you try something stupid and embarrass the Lord then I will take it personal. I will come looking for you.”
Seeing Michael starting to leave without cutting him into pieces embolden Lucifer and he smirked, “Well, at least, we know where we stand with each other.”
Slowly ascending the archangel looked down and yelled, “Lucifer, you have been warned. There will be no second chance. Watch yourself!”
When he saw Michael had disappeared from sight Lucifer mumbled to himself, “I don’t need a second chance.”
Gabriel had been watching the exchange between Michael and Lucifer from a distance. When he saw Michael take flight he approached his fellow angel and asked, “Luce, are you all right?”
Lucifer composed himself. After all, Gabriel was his friend and he had nothing to do with the events that had unfolded. He gave a weak smile and then replied with a firm conviction, “Yes, I am, Gabe. I’m starting to see clearly for the first time. I’m starting to realize what my destiny is.”
This caught Gabriel off guard. He thought Lucifer would have been humbled if not outright humiliated at the way Michael had spoken to him. Instead, he detected defiance and a hint of rebelliousness in his friend. If there was any way he could help him to get back on the straight and narrow and redeem himself with the Lord, he was willing to try.
“Do you need to talk? I’m willing to listen.”
“No, thank you. The time for talk has past,” Lucifer divulged in a cold and calculating manner.
“Well, I’m starting to worry about you, buddy,” Gabriel continued. “I know lately you’ve been upset about things. It’s not good to take it so personally.”
Lucifer briefly closed his eyes at Gabriel’s lack of understanding. “It is personal,” he said. “But I appreciate your concern. Believe me buddy; it’ll all work out in the end.”
Gabriel tried to peer into his friend’s eyes to get an indication if he was leveling with him. Not being able to read his emotions he asked, “Are you sure? I don’t want to see you get into trouble.”
Lucifer smiled and punched Gabriel on the arm. “Yes, yes, I’m sure. Look, you know I can only do what He lets me do. What kind of trouble would He allow?”
Gabriel returned the smile and remarked, “Yeah, well, just be careful. Don’t go tinkering with anything.”
This time Lucifer laughed and asked, “Who me? Don’t worry, Gabe. Besides, this is paradise. What could I do to mess that up?”
“You sure you’re okay?”
“Yes, I’m sure.”
With that assurance Gabriel felt better about his friend, but he still had a lingering suspicion that he was hurting more than he was letting on. “Well, then, come on; let’s go watch the new creation. I’ve been told He’s going to take a rib from the man to make the companion.”
Lucifer thought to himself “so that’s how He’s going to do it; a stinking man rib instead of a piece of me.” He wasn’t about to join in a celebration that would only humiliate him further. “You go ahead, Gabe. I’ll watch from over here.”
Gabriel turned to leave, thought about it, and then turned back. “All right, but, listen if you need me don’t hesitate, okay? I’m there for you.”
“Okay. Sure,” Lucifer agreed as he pushed Gabriel toward the sleeping Adam. “Go on. You’re going to miss it if you don’t hurry.”
Gabriel joined the gathering force of angels, watching the sleeping man, in eager anticipation of God’s creative touch. Disinterested in the proceedings, Lucifer strolled over to the tree of good and evil where a large snake was curled around a limb.
“Hello, Mr. Snake,” he announced as he made himself visible. The snake was momentarily stunned to see an angel appear out of thin air. Then he tried to slither away. Lucifer caught him by his head and held him up to look at him. The snake curled his body around Lucifer’s arm and tried to squeeze but the angel was too powerful for him to have any effect.
“Don’t be shy,” Lucifer said as he studied the snake’s flicking tongue. “Or, is it possible you’re like me and just not interested in all the excitement?” He tried to do his tongue like the snake’s but couldn’t quite get it right. “How do you do that?” he asked. The snake just kept on flicking. Lucifer gave a sigh and asked, “Don’t you find it interesting how much everyone delights in a bunch of dirt? You know, Mr. Snake, at first, I was hurt by His rejection, but now, I don’t know. I feel something, but I don’t know what it is. I’m going to have to figure it out.”
He placed the snake back on the limb and let him go. “Go on. Go on, but don’t go too far. I might need you later.” The snake looked back at him and then glided down the tree trunk. Lucifer took a long look at all his fellow angels around Adam as they excitedly waited for the Lord to perform a miracle. He shook his head and turned away.

As all the angels watched, the invisible finger of God moved over the sleeping Adam and made a bloodless incision in his left side. A single rib was removed and placed in the dirt beside him. As the wind started to swirl the dirt around the rib, God’s finger closed the opening in Adam’s side leaving no scar or any indication of what had happened.
The angels marveled at what they were seeing as in the middle of the twirling dirt a body was formed. Even the animals that were standing nearby paused to watch. Lucifer stood at a distance with his arms folded in apathy.
Finally, the creation was completed and the dust and wind subsided. Lying beside Adam was another creature very much like him but with marked differences. It was slightly smaller than him but its hair was much longer and glowed with the glory of fine silk. The creature’s face had a more delicate look than Adam’s and was petite when compared with his. Its breast were larger and well rounded while its genital area was quite different from the man’s. The angels cheered and praised God at the sight of this new creation.
The creature was not breathing. Once again, the finger of God made the air twirl above the creature’s head for a few moments and then the wind swung down and entered its nostrils. With a gasp it started breathing and opened its eyes for the first time. After glancing around for a moment, it set up and observed the sleeping Adam. When he let out a little snore the creature smiled the most beautiful smile ever seen. It was enough to melt every heart watching and it did melt the angel Samyaza’s heart. He had never seen anything like it, and he became infatuated with what he saw.
The creature’s gentle touch was enough to wake the sleeping man. Adam awoke and before opening his eyes he rubbed his side. It felt a little different. Once he had his eyes opened he turned to see the creation staring and smiling at him. He quickly jumped to his feet and helped the creature to its. He returned the smile and said, “Hello, I’m Adam.”
The sweetest of voices replied, “Hello, Adam.”
Taking its two hands into his he studied its face and then the rest of its body. Finally, he declared, “This is at last bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. This one will be called ‘Woman’ because from man this one was taken.” With that Woman took her hand and gently rubbed his cheek and he swooned at the touch.
A great calmness occurred in the garden as the Voice of God came and spoke, “Be fruitful and become many and fill the earth and subdue it. Have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens, and every living creature that is moving upon the earth. Blessed be Adam and blessed be Woman.”
Adam fell to one knee and bowed his head. Woman followed suit. Full of emotion and gratitude he gushed, “Thank you, my Lord. Thank you for everything.” Then he rose to his feet and kissed Woman’s hand and said, “Come with me and let me show you our home. It’s as beautiful as you.” They started to leave when Adam stopped and did a double take. Woman touched his hand and asked, “What’s wrong?” He turned back to her and replied, “I don’t know. I thought that oak tree was leaning but it’s not. I guess I’m seeing things.” She reached up and kissed him on the cheek and the tree no longer mattered.
As Adam and Woman walked away holding hands to explore the rest of Eden the angels broke out into joyous singing and dancing. They were thrilled at what the Lord had accomplished and were grateful to be part of it. The air was filled with worship of the Almighty and God smiled from his throne in the heavens. It was good.
But not everyone was pleased with what had been done. There was one who was bitter at being passed over when he had offered to help. Watching Adam and Woman laugh as she tasted her first bite of fruit, Lucifer shuddered and mumbled, “I think I’m gonna be sick. All this commotion and for what? Two bags of walking and talking dirt?”
Raising his eyes heavenward he muttered, “You think You did good, don’t you? Well, we’ll see. We’ll see.”
