Jerry F. Crews is the pseudonym used by author Jerry W. Crews. This intensely private person uses the pseudonym to maintain his anonymity. After delighting readers with Simple Stories and More Simple Stories, Crews turned his attention to this collection. As he so elegantly explains, “It kept me busy so I wouldn’t have to do all those chores my wife wanted me to do.” With the loving support of his family, and especially his wife, he was finally able to produce some of the most imaginative and innovative stories he has ever written. Lovingly he says of his wife, “We have so much in common. We both love the same person.”
The inspiration for Even More Simple Stories came from Crews’ pilgrimage to Roswell, New Mexico. It was there; after getting lost in the desert and experiencing exhaustion and dehydration, he had a vision of immense proportions. He was able to see things that have never been seen before in the history of man. Believing he had been given a divine revelation of the end of all things he trekked toward what he thought was the end of the earth. But this was only a hallucination, and the mirage faded into a cliff which he immediately tumbled down. He rolled into the back yard of one of the city’s councilmen and landed squarely in a cactus bed. Two days later while lying in his hospital bed, Crews made a remarkable observation, “Coming here was a stupid idea.” So, after his release from the hospital he decided to take a vacation with more civilized surroundings. This was how he decided to visit New York City. After arriving, and on his way to the hotel, he was mugged, robbed, and stripped naked. Shortly thereafter he was attacked by a pack of rats. When he finally found his hotel he locked himself in the room for the entire week. While alone and nursing his wounds, he reflected, “Coming here was a stupid idea.” Leaving the skyscrapers behind he forged ahead to the shores of Myrtle Beach, SC where he found solace in the warm ocean waters. Later in his motel room, while treating multiple jelly fish stings, he determined what was needed was the spiritual cleansing that could only come from burying himself in the sand along the beach. Lying entombed, not able to move, with only his face visible, and the waves rushing in from high tide, he concluded, “Coming here was a stupid idea.” So, after having his lungs pumped free of water, he went home, locked the door, and sat in his recliner for a year and a half. Here is where he was able to envision and imagine the stories that are produced in this publication.
Even More Simple Stories comes on the heals of two previous works. No doubt Crews has the ability to produce original, innovative, thought provoking, and marvelously crafted material. Unfortunately, none of it is found in any of his writings. But, please try to enjoy this book anyway. If nothing else it can be used as a good door stop or book end.
